Loosen the belt and spin the pullies/tensors, and the MGU pulley. You will be able to tell by the rough/grinding feel. That should tell you if it is bearing failure and which one.

I definitely would not call it a "common" problem. The factory battery being a cheap battery is far more common, along with the fact that even when turned off, these trucks are power hungry.
Weren't you talking about a leak FROM the cylinder into the water jacket which would be indicated by exhaust gases in the radiator/coolent, thus expanding the baloon /glove. I was talking about a leak from the oil passage to the coolent passage. A head gasket leak can be to either of these, or...
