button press + no LED -----did you try a different battery for heck of it? even though it read 3.0 volts, if its 3 years old, it might just be a weak battery.
shifter should work, you just have to configure the BCM correctly.
and this is where you really need a factory truck config to copy the settings from. you can try to guess at them and you might get lucky, but its tricky.

you need to read codes with jscan or alfaobd, all modules to see what isn't happy.
you can't go by the warning lights on the dashboard to tell you what is incorrect.
did you change "shifter type" in the BCM vehicle settings?
have done several keys, never tried a new RFH, but I did try a new/virgin BCM and was not successful.
tried various procedures with jscan, alfaobd, cda6, witech2.0 (aftermarket account), and also a friend who is a locksmith with credentials tried with his tool, and we could not get the BCM...
this is really odd. I have a friend with a cluster swap and also is receiving the "--" display. but his truck is not factory digital cluster and is modded, has alternate TCM, etc. your truck being factory digital cluster, and working before bcm changes, makes me think there has to be some...
you sure the gear indicator was working before? I'm working with another ram owner that did a cluster swap and he's also unable to get gear indicator to display..but he also has paddles and a cluster swap and some other mods, so I dont know if its a TCM issue, or if its something else that got...
unless the eco diesels are different in some way, the wheel should be plug and play, and the paddles will work as gear limiter buttons.
unless something got messed up in alfa. which bcm settings have you tried?
mine smells like coolant up front, I cant find no leak either. my grand Cherokee still. I think it's just the recovery tank venting and this coolant smells after a while.
