the early 5th gen trucks with 5.7L HEMI motors called for 5W-20 oil but the later ones call for 0W-20 oil...
do you folks believe the thinner oil is just to get better fuel economy or is it something bigger than that??

i tried looking up threads about this but couldn't find anything*

5w20 and 0w20 are basically the same. Also numbers are ballpark, you need to see the specification sheet to see the actual viscosity

There is no fuel mileage difference between a 0W-20 and a 5W-20. They are both 20 weight oils. The 0W just flows better in cold temps getting oil to critical areas faster.

so should those in warmer climates stick with the 5W-20 for long term dependability and performance?

Who here is running Amsoil synthetic oil?
I've been running it for years in my 2017 Lonestar 2wd and my 2019 Big Horn 4x4 OE 5W-20
I just sent my last oil change sample to Blackstone labs for analysis. I'm in Austin Tx area

I won't use Amsoil. Don't care if it's the best thing ever. Pushy Amsoil dealers and spamming car groups with relentless marketing BS turned me off years ago

I have been running synthetic 5W20 on our trucks (currently 210,000 and 235,000 miles) changing every 10,000 miles. Brand? Whatever the dealer puts in, not sure what they use. Have oil analysis done every now and then, no problems reported. Blackstone suggested I could even go to 12,000 mile intervals. People overthink oil IMO.

I have a good friend who works for mobile oil as a chemical engineer. He will only use PUP (Pennzoil ultra premium full synthetic) says it's way better than mobile 1

there’s a guy (forgot his name) on youtube, who done testing and concluded that synthetic oil from costco, walmart, amazon, etc. are totally fine to use

@HSKR R/T you probably think i’m full of sh*t but here you go bud

Project farm is a joke when it comes to oil comparison. The methods they used don't even come close to simulating actual engine environment. Watch The Motor Oil Geek, and you will see there are differences and they aren't all good

send me the link of which exact video you’re referring to. i’ll take a look.

project farm also sends the oil out to blackstone for analysis as well.
