I bought a 2023 Ram Rebel with 28k miles. The only thing I didn't like is the first oil change, via carfax, was done at 10k miles. Engine sounds great and the oil changes were done at 10k, 18k, and 27k. Should I be worried?

hay it is what it is, HUGE debate here on oil changes. as a former tech me many mechanics agree 5k on a oil change is the best practice. going forward i suggest changing it at 5k mi.
the hardest thing on the hemi is idle time keep it to a minimum.

Maybe the guy did one at 5k in his driveway, that won't be on Carfax. Maybe it was a pain in the butt and he said "I'm having someone else do this crap from now on." Wouldn't be an unusual thing. Just because you have some data doesn't mean you have all the data.

Either way I'd be done thinking about it. If you like the truck, enjoy it.

I’m on my third RAM Hemi in 12 years with a combined 295,000 miles and have only done 10,000 miles oil changes when the oil life monitor indicated and have had zero problems. None of those three trucks has ever even been in the shop once or even had a warranty claim.

I say don’t worry at all about a 10,000 mile oil change listed. Using quality synthetic oil this isn’t even a concern unless the motor spent a ton of time idling. Your hour meter would tell you that.

10k or 12 months is the factory OCI recommendation. As long as they didn’t exceed that I don’t see any reason to be worried.

Being a 2023 with only 28k miles...nah, I wouldn't worry. Just keep up with the OCI going forward. It would be a different story if it had around 70k miles and all of the OCIs were like that though.

it's fine.
too late to worry about it anyways.
just do it at 5k from now on.

i mean i did my first oil change at 800 miles on the clock, and that's because I was busy and put additional 300 miles on it.

As mentioned z recommended oil change interval says not to exceed 10k miles or 12 months. Original owner may have just went off the oil life monitor on first change. While many professionals recovering the factory fill out early to get rid of breaking wear metals, there are probably millions of Rams on the road that I ky get oil changed when he truck tells the owner it's time.

I discovered that the oil life remaining monitor on my 2021 Laramie doesn’t notify when the 12 month period has passed. It only knows miles.

3 ram's with a combined 295k actually is not that much. average less than 100k each. i've seen 265k on 1 ram with 5k oil changes and still climbing. over 95% of mechanics will tell you no more than 5k. oil is cheap insurance.
facts they extend oil change intervals to claim lower maintenance costs, 10k changes will get you out of the warranty period that is all they care about.
i'm done that's my truth bomb i will not debate this any further

Because that's what it's based on. Not time

Doesn't mean it was only changed at 10,000. That's because the dealer record showed that. A lot of people take their vehicles in for the 10K service, but do a in between oil change at 5K themselves or at a independent shop that may not be recorded by Carfax.

My truck gets an oil change every 3,000 miles, which is 1 year with my annual driving, but zero records on Carfax because I do it myself.

If you're still under the powertrain warranty, make sure to do at least an annual oil change regardless of miles or what the computer tells you, or it could void the warranty.

My humble opinion, not a mechanic, is that if it was synthetic you will be fine. The previous owner likely went by the oil life gauge, which we all hope is relatively accurate. I love my 22 but changing oil is a pain. The oil drains right into a cross member and the filter is a messy pain to get out. At least the guy was smart enough to have someone else do it.

122,000, 110,000 and 63,000 on my current truck.

Want me to really blow your mind?🤯
When I owned Chevy trucks previously I ran Amsoil and went at least 15,000 miles between oil changes. Zero issues. This was the late 90’s to early 2010’s. I know for a fact at least a few of those trucks are still going strong with no engine problems and well over 200,000 miles and another approaching 300,000.

you should be okay like other people said just stay around 5k,

I have a 2017 Hemi with oil changes done at the monitor (every 10k miles) and it has 215k miles no issues. Previous hemi I foolishly traded at 140k miles and it did 10k intervals. I currently have two other vehicles with over 200k miles each, one a turbo, with no issues and 10k intervals per the minder. Minimal oil consumption between changes and all pressures fine. I maintain 6 cars at my house and never had an oil related issue. We drive a lot and keep cars a long time. Have had others over 200k.

I don’t see any issue with doing the changes when the monitor says to do them. And I’ll get flamed for this -even for my hurricane. I expect more than 200k out of an engine these days. I do use full synthetic.

If you are uncomfortable with the long maintenance interval - just do you and start changing every 5k miles. Your truck doesn’t have enough miles on it that one long interval would cause damage - even if the first oil change.
