I read an incredibly detailed post from five years ago on the difference between the 3:21 and 3:92 gear ratios. Hats off to "Jack" for that post. One of the details was that the final drive ratio is the same when the 3:21 is in 7th gear ad the 3:92 is in 8th. That said, is there any negative effect of locking out 8th gear on a 3:21 when towing? Is it necessary when towing an average size loaded utility tailor or boat? In the days of four speed with over drive it was said that locking out overdrive could heat up the transmission too much. Would that apply to locking out 8th gear?
Thank you all.

do you use tow-haul mode when towing?

I kinda doubt you'll be in 8th gear very much when pulling a trailer. I know with my 3.21 gears and an empty truck, it will still downshift to 7th on the freeway on a 4% grade. And then usually it will upshift again. Then downshift. Until I hit tow/haul and it stops hunting.
