Fuel storage in bed ideas

I wanted to revive this thread and ask if anyone has installed Rotopax in their beds and what configuration you would recommend.

This is probably the only picture I have with the gas tank inthe bed. Taken just north of Arctic Circle off Dalton Highway in Alaska.
With the Decked drawer, I mounted it to the bed rail using a piece of metal (i think it was a plate from something that I had before... don't remember. I put the whole thing together in 2022 while trying to turn a bone stock truck ready for overlanding with electricals, suspensions, etc in less than 2 months) and attach the Rotopax mount to it. Sits right on top of the drawer and is sturdy, despite only utilizing ONE mount on the bottom.

It is sturdy enough for me to send it through the desert with all kinds of whoops and bumps doing highway speed and not worry about it.

Yes I have thought of a "drag up" tank. I have two issues, they are so permanent and these short 5'7" beds suck. My next one may be a 2500 Cummins with a 60 or 75 gallon transfer tank for sure. And the HD trucks payload can handle it.
Diesel isn’t nearly as combustible as gas so the transfer tanks are difficult to find and expensive for gas. Just think of the liability of having 50 plus gallons of gas in the bed leaking out after a wreck. In our litigious society, its a gift for attorneys.
The weight is an issue for 1500 owners as well.

I’d just put it off and get a diesel long bed, then the transfer tank of 75-100 gallons.

Yep you are right. Transfer tanks are for diesel. Swapping to the larger 33 gal tank would make the most sense.

33gallon is all you need tbh. that is, if you're worried about range when heading into the unknown.
in that 15k miles round trip including going all the way to Coldfoot, AK and Tuktoyaktuk in Canada, never did I need to use my 5gallon spare. in fact, I carried that 5 gallon from Bellingham, WA through Canada into Alaska, then back through Canada going all the way north then through Jasper and Banff and entered through Montana and did Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton and through UT, NV, AZ, and back home lol

just need to be mindful about where you're going and remember to fill up lol
