2019, Ram 1500. 40,000 miles. Under warranty (barely).
Engine light, misfire on 2.
Swap plugs, coil, injector, misfire does not move. Did this myself.
Cylinder compression is down about 10#.
I do not hear the dreaded tick. Not blatantly anyway. The right bank is making a bit more noise than the left.
Regular oil changes, Castrol 5W20 full synthetic. Pix filters.
Took it to the dealer. After fumbling around for a week, they are pulling the heads.
Anyone know what I might expect?
If the lifter has gone south, what is the factory fix? New engine? Repair existing engine?
I fear I am doooooomed . . .

Well that's a little dramatic. If it's under powertrain warranty, what's the issue? They'll fix it and you'll be golden.

It depends on the damage it's done to the engine. Might just need a new camshaft and lifter(s), if it's bad it'll be a whole new engine.

Indeed, the report is a "collapsed lifter".
Communication is poor to non existent.
Heads are off, supposed to be getting new cam and lifters.
I would surely like to see the cam, but i am not "in the loop".
My presence seems to be an annoyance.

You are not alone. 40011 miles, lifter went bad caused a dropped valve, engine replaced under lifetime warranty along with a new battery for the cost of $106 (my deductible+tax). Hang tight, wish you well and hopefully all will go well.

I don't even know if you're lucky or not. On the one hand, no, because there's a breakdown, but on the other hand, they repaired it under warranty.

I met the mechanic that did the job, seemed like a very capable and conscientious man who has been at it for years so that makes me feel good, but at the same time there is a lot of wrenching going on. Time will tell. I'm not going anywhere as I have the "lifetime warranty".

I still have a "love affair" with my 6 year old Ram, just not as passionate, hopefully no divorce. Cheaper to keep her.

While it sucks to have engine damage at that low miles, you are getting new parts that hopefully will now give you years of trouble-free operation. For those that purchase (used) in excess of the factory drivetrain warranty it would have been a “bitter pill to swallow”, thankfully you avoided that. Its still a good truck.

"For those that purchase (used) in excess of the factory drivetrain warranty it would have been a “bitter pill to swallow." YEAH - it sure makes me gun shy on buying used now.

I wont buy anything newer than about 2015 used. These newer vehicles, especially diesels, can bankrupt you.

I used to read the powerstroke and duramax forums as well as watch some of the diesel UTube videos and the cost to replace an engine is staggering.
$20K or more staggering…

Well, the Service Manager is now saying there is too much wear, and they will be replacing the engine.
Probably for the best . . .

I got my truck back a week ago 64,500 miles on truck covered under my extended warranty even though this has been documented that I was hearing this issue before manufacturer warranty expired. They replaced driver cylinder head due to some wear and just removed passenger side and cleaned it, a couple push rods and rocker arms and supposely all lifters were replaced. and this was due to lifter tapping and lower end knock. They don't believe theres an issue with crank shaft bearings. well when I pickup truck it was like brand new smooth and quiet. Now after 3 days of driving. Lifter tapping and lower end knock is back. Took it in last night and started it this morning and truck did not tap or knock made me look like I didn't know what I was talking about. I like my truck but regret buying first year model. nothing but issues one after the other. Debating if I should sell it even though all items are being taken care of other then present issue with engine tapping/knocking.
