Is oem bumper made of steel?

I’ve got a 2023 ram 1500 limited. Had it for a few weeks and have just yesterday out on the license plates. This morning got rear ended while sitting at a traffic light. It was a low speed bump but I noticed the bumper has a noticeable dent in it. Are these things not steel?

I thought they were steel, but maybe the California ones are tofu to comply with some stupid law.

I tapped on one I was test driving because I was curious about that and it sounded like metal.

It is steel, however truck bumpers aren't federally mandated. They don't need to meet any impact standards like a car bumper.

This is why you can legally drive without the rear bumper on the truck, and there was a time when the rear bumper was actually considered a factory option when purchasing

It was a very low speed collision. The person behind me was probably asleep or on the phone… Californians man… I did get the information from them. Was just thinking if I should get a heavy duty powder coated steel bumper instead for the future occurrences…

It's probably cheaper to get an aftermarket heavy duty off-road bumper than a replacement factory one. Get some estimates from body shops and make your decision. But I'd definitely get it taken care of either way. Collect money for the repair, and just use it to buy a new bumper of your choice.

Nothing says “truck” like wood bumper.

Oh wait….this is California and you have to use that “ethically sourced humanely harvested wood” from trees that committed suicide in the wild of their own free will and found accidentally by a passing hippie. Aftermarket heavy steel is probably cheaper.

Would be hard to prove diminished value if resolved with an OEM bumper. A minor ding like that doesn't diminish value

No.. parking lot issues involving my son. Still unresolved who did what. ..but I will say, his 2005 F150 rear bumper has ZERO damage and mine looks similar to yours.

I have not fixed it yet.. I'm still waffling between after market and OEM. Not sure the after market ones I've found would look right on my Longhorn. They're all 'too' much for me.

No.. parking lot issues involving my son. Still unresolved who did what. ..but I will say, his 2005 F150 rear bumper has ZERO damage and mine looks similar to yours.

I have not fixed it yet.. I'm still waffling between after market and OEM. Not sure the after market ones I've found would look right on my Longhorn. They're all 'too' much for me.

Yeah I definitely get the "too" much aspect. A lot of them look like offroad bumpers and it's not at all a look I want. If you find something that looks mostly OEM but heavier duty, please let me know. So far I like @VICE design one but it's for 4th gen. Hopefully they come out with one for our trucks soon.
