First off, I apologize for yet ANOTHER oil thread... :-(

I know that 2022's specify 0w-20 for the 5.7, so I have 2 questions:
1) Is it OK to go with 5w-30? (it's HOT down here in Houston!!! - I just wonder if 0w-20 is too thin)
2) If I go with 5w-30 (with oem filter) would that void my manuf warranty and my extended warranty?

Those of you with 2022's, are most of y'all using the recommended 0w-20?

Thanks, and again I apologize for the oil Q.

Does your engine in Houston run hotter than the engine in the North?

Will it void your warranty....that is up to the dealer. I live in the north and its 18 degrees this morning. I run 0w20, I tow a 24' travel trailer and a 24' boat. I also work for a Ram dealer, there is no reason you can't run 5w30, I will eventually change to 5w30 if I keep the truck.

0w-30 has better performance over a wider range of temps than 5w-30, so I’d use 0w-30 before 5w-30. However, it’s worth saying that if your manual calls for 0w-20 and you actually get caught using a different spec oil, that could cause a warranty denial.

I had a Jeep commander with the 5.7 and I tried switching to 5w-30 which resulted in a check engine light for incorrect oil viscosity followed by lifter failure once the MDS tried to activate with the wrong oil weight. The repair bill on that was substantial.

If you turned MDS *OFF*, would that still trigger a MIL?? My truck has NEVER seen MDS.
But being as 0W-20 is the new standard in the 5.7 . . . .? ? ?

Pretty much, they switched to 0W-20 in 2022. I'm not sure they back-specced it yet, but my guess is yes. I'm going to call my service advisor and see if they are switching all previous years to 0W-20, if so then I'll switch to that on my DIY changes, especially since most of my other vehicles also use 0W-20.

Here we go...

You do know there is a huge oil/additive thread on the other Ram forum that evolved over many years with all kinds of tests, stories and anecdotes? Why start another one?

You’re asking why someone started a thread on this forum because a similar thread exists on a different forum?

2012 owners manual:
"NOTE: Vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine must use
SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper
operation of the Multi-Displacement System (MDS)."

2014 owners manual:
"NOTE: MOPAR® SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to
Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 may be used when
SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting MS-6395 is not available"

2016 owners manual:
"MOPAR SAE 5W-20 engine oil approved to FCA Material
Standard MS-6395 such as Pennzoil, Shell Helix or
equivalent is recommended for all operating temperatures."

2022 owners manual:
"We recommend using Mopar® SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Engine Oil which meets the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS-6395. Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-20 engine oil can be used but must have the API Starburst trademark

NOTE: Hemi engines (5.7L) at times can tick right after startup and then quiet down after approximately 30 seconds. This is normal and will not harm the engine. This characteristic can be caused by short drive cycles. For example, if the vehicle is started then shut off after driving a short distance. Upon restarting, you may experience a ticking sound. Other causes could be if the vehicle is unused for an extended period of time, incorrect oil, extended oil changes or extended idling. If the engine continues to tick or if the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on, see the nearest authorized dealer."

So with the EXACT SAME engine with MDS, we went from "you MUST use 20 weight oil" to "it's OK to use 30 weight" to "we recommend even thinner 0W20 weight" and then finally they admitted that the watery 20 weight oils cause ticking because the viscosity is too thin and the lifters bleed down too fast, plus there is improper lubrication.

So as mentioned in the video above ^^^ you guys can run whatever you want to in your expensive engine. But my engine will NEVER see 0W20 water oil.

Follow the manufacturer recommendation, or you are at risk. Simple as that.

Anyone that’s says you can run other types of viscosity, they can split the bill of any engine work done, and put their money where there mouth is.

Are you 100% sure the oil was to blame? How long were you running 5w-30 before the issue started?

Just go to RamForum and look for the synthetic oil thread in 4th Gen engine and performance area.
There's over 46K posts starting from 2013 and still going. A lot of interesting information and as many opinions as there are ...

I'm 100% sure it was the oil, when the MDS went to activate the engine started misfire and would throw an engine code and run on all 8 cylinders again. It happened immediately after I changed the oil when the MDS system activated. I was thinking I was going to change the oil back to the original weight the following week but the lifters failed before then. The way I drive the MDS wasn't typically on so I think that's why the engine ran fine for a week before it failed. I always changed my oil every 3000 miles with penzoil platinum and never had any issues before this. I used Penzoil platinum in both grades.
