Has anyone else experienced the absolutly unacceptable defect with towing a light weight trailer (3500lbs) while using Tow/Haul Mode with the 2022 ETorque?

My brand new 70k 2022 Bighorn is currently back at the dealer because I had the audacity to use the factory equipped Tow/Haul mode and and it wrecked my transmission. Apparently this is a known issue and is due to faulty software. (Star Case# 102093895) - Using Tow/Haul Mode when it's not needed will throw your truck into Limp-Home mode. Less than 500 miles and my truck is sitting at the dealers, and they can keep it for all I care.

To say I'm angry is an understatement. I'm going to talk to the manager on Monday about a Lemon/Buy Back and I'll take my cash to a Chevy Dealer.

In the meantime, I've got a beautiful new travel trailer I can't use, and all the people I annoyed by bragging about how good Ram trucks are since I ordered mine in Jan are now laughing their butts off while they drive their Fords and Chevys.

Bottom line.. If you own a 2022 5.7 ETorque, do NOT use tow/haul mode.

I've towed nearly 5k miles now. 3900 lb camper. 22 5.7 eTorque. Tow/haul on. Truck's pulled it great, but have seen that issue twice now. Hope they get a fix in for it.

Coming from three GMCs, I'll just say good luck if you think you won't have any issues with them.

Appreciate the reply,

So you personally have seen the issue twice on your rig or know of it with other rigs?

If yours, what did you do to "clear" it so you could keep driving. My dealer is acting like this is the end of the road for my truck and it's gonna be weeks before they get a fix.

Yep, twice on mine. Last time was Wednesday. Had to pull off the road and turn the truck off and back on. After that, truck drove normal but the CEL stayed on (I called Mark Dodge to make sure this was OK). CEL eventually turned off on its own, but stored the U0402 code which I had pulled at a dealer around here (we're traveling).

Both times it happened, tow/haul mode was on, we had just come off hilly terrain, and were around 40-45 mph. Seems like it won't shift past whatever gear you're in when it happens.

Great info, thank you for the reply.

Sounds like I should just have just kept my truck at home and followed my own advice and stop using the T/H Mode, but on the other hand they need to fix this.

Yep, definitely needs to be fixed, but the tech at this dealer said it was probably just a comms glitch between the TCM and ECM. Haven't noticed any mechanical issues with it, and it's only happened twice over several thousand miles with tow/haul on.

I didn't have much choice about keeping mine. We're on the road now and can't be without the truck.

I have a 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie without E torque, and happily, I have had "0" issues with pulling my travel trailer. It must be something with the
E-torque motors? I also hope they figure it out. I will most likely be upgrading to a 2500 or more on my next truck. Love my Ram though.

I have not experienced this at all on my 2022. I've got about 2200 miles on it, so not much.

Happened to me with a 12 foot uhaul trailer. The trans went into limp mode and wouldn’t shift. Had to turn it off and turn it back on like you said. Had less than 3000 miles on the truck. Dealer read code and it said something like implausible data from Tcm. Cleared the code and stopped using tow haul, didn’t have it happen again. Having a brand new truck that won’t shift out of first gear and is throwing a slew of warning codes sure does get you annoyed, though!

Towed about 250 more miles without any issues. Will be towing about 1k miles soon, so hoping whatever it was doesn't come back.

Towed my Grand Design Imagine XLS 17MKE 2,000 miles down to Florida and back in tow/haul mode. Worked flawlessly. 👍

Happens all the time….. simply park the truck after it goes into limp mode, restart and the problem goes away. Will keep a check engine light on for a few start cycles.

known problem by ram, with no fix….yet.

go get your truck back, just drive it without using tow/haul and it works fine…. Software problem with a fix in the near future. Not a deal breaker for me.

Thats odd, my 2021 E-Torque Hemi has no such issue.. It tows like a beast. I have a multitude of trailers and 2 campers ,from a 1500lb single axle utility , to 7500lb Forest River and up to my Hyd Dump that weighs 12,00lbs loaded .. It tows every one effortlessly .. My previous GMC Seirra was no match for it. And MPG is over 50% better w/Ram !! No joke. GMC got 8mpg towing, and could not tow my big Dump trailer up a hill

19-21 5.7 hemi eTorque are okay...

22 5.7 hemi eTorque have the issue and there's a TSB in the thread I linked to update the hybrid control module SW to fix it... Just came out this week.

its usually earlier models with glitches, not later.. good to hear theres a simple cure for the issue. The E-TORQUE adds extra torque at low speeds with heavy loads . It would suck to not take advantage of the design

Is this a new feature on '22's? I'm not sure if mine can forcefully spin much above ~1500 rpm. Obviously generates at max engine rpm. I was initially wishing for this as well.

Glad (?) to see I’m not the only one. It’s happened twice towing an empty 7x14 enclosed trailer that weighs about 1,500 pounds. Ironically it hasn’t happened the last 2 times which were after I installed the OEM trailer brake controller.

I have already called the dealer about it and they were unfamiliar with the problem but glad to see someone shared the TSB.

According to RAM, the E-torque is activated for the AUTO-START feature rather than engine starter having to start engine ,then move vehicle. and assists transition into MDS ECO mode [ 4 cylinder] and provides additional torque under load up to 2000rpm where engine torque is low . All this is provided by 48V Battery Pack behind seats thru the belt drive on crankshaft , which is recharged by the 48V generator when vehicle is braking. The rest of the truck runs on the 12V conventional battery
