Use the +/- buttons on the steering wheel to achieve the highest gear and you won't have this issue, and MDS/ECO will never kick in . . . no more droning noise!

Drive it like you stole it! That'll keep it from coming on. :ROFLMAO:

I used to always turn MDS off when I owned the 2020 Laramie. Even before I upgraded the exhaust the MDS was very noticeable in both sound and feel. I don't bother doing that with my new Limited because I don't really notice when MDS is active. I really have to try to notice when it turns on with this truck. That might change if I ever upgrade the exhaust, but for now it's not worth turning off.

I have a 2021 Laramie with the 5.7 Hemi and no Eco-boost. Ours has no detectable drone when in the MDS (Eco Mode) kicks in. In most cases, the stock exhaust is designed to completely kill the drone. I can't think of any other reason you should have drone other than a change in the exhaust system. On your truck, have you modified your exhaust system or has it been damaged?

Yep, I do this every time I drive. I agree with Mike, it's much more noticeable with an aftermarket muffler/exhaust, although I can still feel it going down to 4 on the stock exhaust as well.

I've been teaching our 16 year old to drive and I make her put it in 8th each time as well. As a passenger, if we don't override mds, I can very clearly feel/tell when it goes down to 4 cylinders. It may be more seamless on other trucks, but mine reminds me exactly of the 4th gen mds.

Did it get worse when changing the exhaust? I was thinking of buying the borla exhaust for it but thought it might make droning louder ?

There is no solution to this, other than ensure it doesn’t go into ECO mode. This bothered me for three years until I sold the truck. Wish I could have better advice :(

That exhaust had some drone to it even without MDS being active. It was worse with the aftermarket exhaust. Is the exhaust you're thinking of buying a cat-back system or just a muffler swap? I've read that the Borla cat-back systems don't drone but I don't have any first-hand experience with it.

Yeah I was looking into the cat-back system

I have a Carven exhaust installed and I do not have any drone in MDS mode. It does 'feel' a bit odd, but that is understandable as they have disabled half of the cylinders :). I am pretty sure that I read somewhere in the manual it can be disabled if you are not happy with it.

so let me ask this
using the plus minus to put the transmission into the highest gear doesn't bog down the engine?

Nope, it will go through the gears exactly as it would if you left it in drive, just won't drop down to 4 cylinder mode. No difference other than that.

I get slight drone in eco at certain load levels. The bigger annoyance is when I go under a moderate load (like an incline) and eco decides to shut off. It feels like a hard downshift on a trans that’s about to go bad.

Not much you can do with the drone when eco mode kicks in, besides going back to stock. You can still here it there anyway. It’s by design, when you cut half the cylinders on a v8 it will sound like crap.

Joe is correct. I'd like to add that as long as you select 8th gear there will be no change in behavior. It's a gear limiter, not a manual shifter.

Call me crazy. But I got new wheels/tires and now it doesn't drone as much in eco anymore. Pretty odd, but I definitely noticed a difference because it used to drive me crazy I would always set the gear limit around town. Probably the tread sound frequency canceling some of the drone out.

Either way, win win.
