PPF horror story - don't be like me

Some of you fellas may be in one of the Facebook groups where I initially posted photos of this, but didn't go into detail. Wanted to share my experience as well as get the name out there of the scumbag who's responsible.

Bought a new truck a few weeks ago. Decided I wanted to get PPF on the painted front bumper (my last truck had some rock chips - not horrendous, but wanted this truck protected while it was still new), as well as the rocker/fender in front of the rear wheels because it gets sand blasted over time from debris kicked up by the front wheels. Called around several shops I've used for tint before that I know and trust, but they were all booked out for 2 months. Normally I'd have waited, but I had a vacation trip to Florida coming up (am there now), and really wanted the protection before putting on nearly 2K highway miles. So I kept calling around.

Found this shop and reached out. Pro Finish Coating Solutions LLC

The owner/operator, Andrew Augustine, was able to get me in a few days before my trip. Leaving the vehicle overnight was not feasible for me, so he accommodated my request to release the vehicle as soon as he was finished. I worked all night, then went to his shop, and waited there patiently for 5 hours while he did the job. His shop is clean and professional - not world class, but better than some places I've been. Up to this point, I had no reason to doubt his ability to do the job, and based on his few (but all very positive reviews), I trusted him.

Red flags I should have caught:
1. Few reviews, most of which were for paint correction and coatings... I think only 1 mentioned clear bra.
2. Business had only been registered for about 2 years. PPF (particularly bulk cut) is apparently an art that really takes time to master.
3. I told him I wanted computer cut film, but after arriving for my appointment, he informed me something happened and he would have to bulk cut it (which he said he was capable of).
4. Around the 3 hour mark he came into the waiting area to grab more film - said he had cut a piece too short. No big deal I thought. Turns out it was the bumper piece, the largest/most difficult part of the job.
5. Never offered to have me check out the job before leaving. Granted, not every place will do this, and it always felt a little rude to ask since you're essentially doubting their ability. I did jokingly say I hope it didn't give him too much trouble (since it took awhile and he had to cut more film) - he acted like everything was fine.
6. I didn't closely inspect the job before paying or leaving (I needlessly trusted everything went okay, and after being there for 5 hours, being awake all night, and my wife bugging when I'd be home, I just wanted to get out of there).

After getting home, I started to inspect the install. There were some air bubbles and wet areas under the film, but I figured this was normal since it was just installed and would fix itself as it dried out. But then I started to notice razor cut marks in the paint. The closer I looked, the more I saw. It became painfully obvious he had no real plan on how he was going to cut the film. There were cut marks on the fog light trim, air dam, different and different spots on the bumper and rear rockers/fenders. Remember how I mentioned he had to cut the bumper piece 2 times? That became obvious when I saw there were cut marks in close, but different, areas of the bumper. Then I started to notice the film itself just looked like crap. Lifting edges that were hidden underneath and behind the plastic trim, completely asymmetrical cuts on each side, and incomplete coverage. I was fuming.

New truck, just trying to get the thing protected before I go on a trip, and I end up worse off than had I just left everything alone and waited for a more reputable shop to do the work. So, I tried reaching out to him in the later hours of the evening. I was polite, clearly stated my concerns, and wanted to know how he could resolve it. Crickets... Tried calling him the next day, and he did not answer. Sent him a message on Facebook (where we had also communicated), and it's still unread. Gave it a few more days before I texted him (from a different phone) asking to schedule a new job. He immediately replied, so it's now obvious that this guy is trying to ghost me. I'm not sure how he thinks that's going to work out well for him or his business, but so far, that's the path he's on.

Until I get back from my vacation, I can't go to his shop (which is 45 minutes away from home, so that doesn't help either). I've already filed a dispute for the payment, and am considering legal action, but I have no idea if his LLC has insurance or assets to cover the damage. My insurance did say they would pay for the damage, but obviously I'd prefer not to file a claim. What a **** show.

Wow, I had never done paint protection film before and the bull stuff I put on in my driveway in the evenings after work looks better than that.

Hopefully he steps up and fixes the paint and gets you a nice pre cut set installed.

Truly horrifying photos on a new truck. I'm sorry you're going to have to go through this. I wouldn't just want my money back, that's for sure. That's damage akin to someone keying your car a dozen times.

Years ago I looked at a truck at a dealership that was known for customizing and applying graphics to the vehicles on their lot. There was a pickup that had horizontal graphics along each side. The top stripe was about 2" wide and each following stripe narrowed until the last was about 1/4" with a 1/4" space between each stripe. The truck must have been on the lot for awhile because the first thing I noticed was the orange rust along the edges of the stripes. The installer had used a razor blade to trim one large piece of vinyl tape to look like individual pieces while on the truck and had cut through the paint into the bare metal. I hope this isnt the case with your install as a partial repaint would be necessary. Sorry you have to deal with this on your new truck.

This makes me nervous seeing this as my truck goes in 2 weeks for a full frontal film. But the guy doing it posts pictures of Ferrari’s and Bugatti’s he’s done, so I know he’s good. Plus did my brother in laws Range Rover and it looks mint. Sorry this happened, I hope this gets cleared up!

That sucks. The guy had been in business for 2 years so it was reasonable to trust him. And I understand about being tired and wanting to get home. That's normal and doesn't excuse bad workmanship or the shop's refusal to discuss afterwards.

I recently had a car detailed priot to selling it. I got a recommendation from a mechanic I used. The car came out worse than when I dropped it off... clearly rubbed off paint and over aggressive rubbing on upholstery left tears. But, as I was selling the car, it was only mildly annoying.

You were treated very badly.

I saw that you're near Butler Co. in Ohio? I'd recommend contacting Clear Bra Ohio in Fairfield to try to fix this after getting a refund from this guy. Had him do the full front of my Limited, including bumper, came out great.

terrible job. Suntek is an awesome product and I have used it on multiple vehicles. Having my 2021 limited fully wrapped as I write this. Here is my take; installation is very difficult and you must use an experienced shop. Most places that just do window tint cant handle it and many places that do vehicle wraps cant handle it. it is a wet application and not heat applied like traditional wrap. A full truck wrap should cost 6-7 grand and be laser cut on site to give you an idea on high quality installers. Suntek has 12 year warranty nation wide so you can go to another shop for repairs (assuming your guy was an authorized installer). SunTek is self healing with heat so all the cut marks and scratches will come out by pouring hot water over them. Bubbles are normal and normal practice is a 1-2 week follow up appointment to address any bubble or raised edges. Lastly when looking for a quality installer normal procedure is for removal of all trim, lights door handles etc and the film edges go under. Fore example on my Limited the three plastic hood pieces are removed film is applied to entire hood and then plastic snapped back on. Grill is fully removed and bench wrapped then reinstalled. If they are not doing this they are not a qualified installer. Normal install time is about 5 days for a full vehicle PPF wrap.

So what do you do with this paint protection film (PPF) when it gets ratty? Is it easy to remove? I've see plenty of used cars with this stuff kind of checkered and peeling. Doesn't look any better than a scratched car IMHO. If it's easy to remove (and potentially replace), that's different. If not, I'm not sure I'm a fan in light of the cost.

The new Suntek PPF has ceramic coating built in and last under warrantee for 12 years. If you have the car that long or ever want to remove it it can be peeled off and you have brand new paint underneath. Product is amazing and most high end sports cars have it (Lambo, Austin Martin, Ferrari, etc).

Obviously this guy is way in over his head. This literally looks like a job someone off the streets would do. Absolutely pathetic workmanship. Hoping he gets stuck with the bill to repaints all parts that were cut, and replace the plastic pieces he cut on as well.

Wow that looks horrible, like a 5 year old did it, sorry that happened to you. I got mine done at 400 miles and there were a few blemishes that needed to both cure out and be touched up but the ppf looks perfect and has actually protected me from rock chips.
2 years isn't that long to be in business and certainly doesn't mean he's got two years of ppf film experience. I researched the hell out of the shop I used because of issues just like this

Peels off with a heat gun fairly easily. Stuff you're seeing checker and peeling is the old school early stuff.
Modern quality ppf doesn't do that.
I have a rock hit on the panel below the headlight, the paint is fine but the film is damaged (did its job), I may take the panel off and have it refilmed 20210605_154839.jpg

Wow, what an absolute hack job. Absolutely terrible.
I hope you get your money back and have him pay for the damage he had done to your brand new truck. Good luck.

I think it looks great!

I kid, I kid! Dude, I'd be beside myself pissed if some clown took a razor blade to my truck. Hope it all works out for you. Oh, don't forget to leave a review with pics on his pages.
