I’ve always used 4H in snowy conditions with my past jeeps and trucks because I didn’t have a 4AUTO option. Wanted to get your thoughts on using the 4AUTO. Does it engage fast enough if you end up sliding or is it better to just use the 4H option?

I think 4A would be fine for sporadic use where you‘ll be driving in mixed dry/snow where you don’t want the 4H in dry pavement, but if you’re going to be in constant snow conditions the majority of the time, then 4H is prob the better setting.

Welcome to the forum btw.

Pls add your truck's vitals to your signature when you have a moment. This makes it easier for other folks to help in case you have questions or concerns about your vehicle.

^^^ Agreed^^^ 4Auto doesn't hurt anything to drive around.

My 2019 Ram Rebel does not have 4auto.
I thought this was omitted on all Rebels. Did they bring it back for 2020 +?

I have it on my 2020

OP said “when you are sliding...”.
Some peeps report that 4A has a bit of a lag, being in 4H there would not have been a lag. Not that there would be a big difference in time but still.

Exactly what I would say.

If roads are getting covered I always switch to 4H and I have Nokian studded tires

^^^ Agreed ^^^ This is how I use 4A and 4H.

I will add that I only use 4H on my back country roads when they are snowy and icy. When I had my Raptor I ended up ditching it on a 90 degree LH turn while in 4A because the front didn’t engage quick or strong enough and the rear ended up pushing the front into the ditch. Just gave it some gas and crawled right out. But decided after that I would not take the corners in 4A again.

i was just out in the ****e, and,

the truck did freaking great in 4A up on 190

that is all.

I just went all around Plano and Frisco in 4A and it handled like a dream. The roads aren’t 100% snow packed yet, so no need for 4H.

What is the benefit of the transfer case without the 4A that the '19 and '20s came with? It seems like only downsides? There must be some kind of upside if the other 1500 lines were coming with 4A, but not the rebel.

I've always thought it was a bummer to not have 4A on my rebel in those 1 inch snow conditions where straight road has dry pavement, but then I slip around at intersections or turns. I'm always toggling between 2W and 4H...

the other one is more robust IIRC

did a bit of an internet search and understand now. (clutch vs mechanical, etc.)
Do the newer rebels with 4A use the 48-11 clutch based system or are they putting in the 48-13 that comes in the TRX

I was taught to go as far as you can in 2WD, THEN switch to 4WD. That way you always have more to give to get home....

we got about 16 inches over the weekend, i tried both 4A and 4H in the deep stuff and found that in 4H traction control wasn't noticeable, in 4A it would slip a bit and the light would flash then she'd bite and be fine (assuming this was the transition period from 2wd to 4wd, did not take long). so, my recommendation is 4H if on unplowed and 4A if on plowed or mixed.

btw, truck handles very nicely when sideways, easily controlled with throttle and steering. didn't whip around too fast that you couldn't catch it. and yes, that was in 4H, caught a berm in the snow with the rears which got me sideways.
