I was washing my truck yesterday and I noticed the bottom of my tailgate has paint rubbed off. It is hitting my license plate cover from the looks of it. This appears to be a bad design by RAM. Do you think this would be covered under warranty?

Imo, prob not.

[Playing devils advocate] "You added the licence cover so u should've made sure it wasnt hitting."

Edit: on the flip side, ask away...all they can say is "No"

Even with a smoked cover, there’s a couple of mm gap
But not sure what would happen if I added weight to the gate when down

Lets break this down.

You added a aftermarket accessory to the truck that in turn caused a defect in the paint and you think they should cover it? Im not following that logic, im sorry.

Hold on, you would think that a regular license plate holder that many cars have would have enough clearance for the truck. You think when they designed the truck that would allow for enough clearance.

A "license plate holder" is still a aftermarket accessory, and yes it apparently causes clearance issues. Bottom line, it is not required to properly display a license plate. Could it have been designed better for the consumer, sure. But if paint wear is caused from said bracket, then no. i woulld not think it can be a warranty item. Just being honest.

Need to go look if mine hits now... but what’s interesting is many dealers install them when you buy it

I will have to check mine, I had a dealer one and replaced it with a plain black frame.

Nope mine is pretty thin and doesn’t even stick above the plastic of the mount area... looking back yours seems to stick up pretty high.

If being honest I would say that if it was a dealer installed license plate frame then you may have an argument but if you put it on then it will prob not be covered under warranty. Although crappy design it might be they don't engineer parts to compensate for aftermarket parts.

Sorry, I have to agree with the other responses: no way that's a warranty claim. If the plate doesn't rub without a frame, then it isn't warranty claim as frames aren't a factory option. Even so, I would bet the advertisement frame your dealer installs (assuming that's how they advertise) wouldn't rub either - I know the one on my '20 1500 doesn't. Is that a PSU alumni frame? It looks really wide at the top & I think that's the issue. Try a frame that isn't as beefy up top & it probably won't rub. Or - I don't know if this would work or not - try elongating all 4 holes in the frame in the top-to-bottom direction to get the frame to sit lower. That might work if there's room for it to move down towards the bumper & there aren't nubs holding the plate in position in the frame. If the plate is held in position in the frame, the plate holes would have to be elongated too if that looks to be an option.

I checked mine and it's way closer than expected. The plate from was installed by the dealer, advertising, and I might pull it off seeing how close it is.

I did notice that my plate frame is almost flush with the top of the plastic plate area.

Pardon the dusty, dirty truck.

Note sure how to link video from tapatalk but it's on youtube.

Yeah those frames installed by the dealer would come off before I left the dealership unless they are going to pay me to advertize for them. I would never have a frame like that but Our plates are shaped like a polar bear so it would look goofy anyway. But I guess some might think Our plate is goofy, lol.

What if you moved the cover to the front?

Had the same problem when adding the VLEDS reverse light to the license plate. Had to trim bottom of license plate 1/4" and re-drill holes to mount it lower. I would not have done it just to add a cover, but I have had these reverse lights on other vehicles and like them. It rubbed until you lowered it.

You can always try, but I don't think so since it wasn't even a dealer installed frame.

As for the scratches that are beyond the clear, you can touch that up with touch-up paint, let it cure for a week and then have a good detail guy do a very light buff to smooth it out. It will be very difficult to see after that.

The touch up paint will fill in the deep scratches and blend in while the lighter scratches will buff away.

I had the same thing happen to my new truck. Stupid design. I just took the plate holder off, but that offers VERY LITTLE TO NO SECURITY for theft.

How does having a license plate frame offer any more theft security than not having one? They're held on using the same four screws.

Some frames come with tamper proof screws that require a special tool to install or remove. I have them on my truck. Typically a torx screw with a pin in the middle, tool has a hole in the center for the pin to slide into and the rest is a typical torx screw.

I'm familiar with security fasteners. In that case, just use security fasteners to secure the license plates. I have to say that I've bought a lot of license plate frames over the years, but I don't remember any of them coming with security fasteners. If security is your concern, all you need is the fasteners They're readily available. No frame required.
