Thinking about switching from a Tacoma... Advice?

Hello all! So as the title states, I'm thinking about giving up on my 3rd gen Tacoma in favor of a 1500. However, I'd like some advice from y'all about a few things.
Background: I had an 08' manual trans access cab Tacoma and LOVED IT. However, I had an unfortunate encounter with a cow in 2018 and ended up getting a new 18' automatic access cab Tacoma. I freaking HATE IT. The gearing is absolute dog ****e in the 3rd gen autos, even with close to $800 in tuning software it pisses me off pretty much every time I drive it. And I just can't justify dumping even MORE money into this thing for a re-gear just to make it drive like it should have from the factory. Toyota really dropped the ball IMO. In addition, my life is pushing me in the direction of needing something different anyways. I'm pursuing a career as a Survival Instructor, and keep finding myself being forced to carry people. Plus my parents aren't getting any younger, and I always seem to get stuck shuttling them and other family members around whenever we're together on vacations and road trips. Obviously, an access cab Tacoma is nowhere near ideal for this. Also, because of my job, I'm looking to purchase or build some kind of travel trailer that I can tow between states (mainly CO and ID at the moment, but also to anywhere in the U.S. I might need to teach or want to go and learn from others) and live in for 100+ days a year. Gonna try to keep it around 7,000lbs or less if I can, but I don't have that bit ironed out yet. In my Tacoma, I'm lucky to get 8-9mpg towing an enclosed utility trailer that's well within load capacities, and it just seems to struggle. I also keep finding myself in positions where I have to tow friend's vehicles up and down mountain roads in CO, and the Tacoma struggles. Honestly, it just seems to step on it's own d!ck every time I need it, and I'm beyond sick of it.

What I'm thinking: It seems to me that a 1500 Big Horn in Eco Diesel would fit the bill nicely, but wanted y'alls thoughts about what I'm planning on doing. In addition to the interstate trips, I'll likely be doing a fair bit of scouting trips from my new homebase near Boise ID up north to the panhandle and parts of Montana looking for property that I can eventually open my own survival school or homestead on. There likely won't be a lot of short trips to the store or anything with the truck, I think I'll be driving the 25 miles or so each way to Boise/Meridian most of the time. So, everything but the specter of maintenance costs and possible catastrophic failure are pushing me towards a diesel. But I also fully acknowledge that I've always wanted a diesel, so I'm a little worried I'm just making justifications based on what I want vs what I need. I did also enjoy my test drive of the HEMI hybrid, but the MPG in the ED is just sooooo damn tempting! I didn't mind the "turbo lag" in the diesel at all, it's miles better than what I experience in my Tacoma with no turbos on a daily basis. So, any advice y'all have would be greatly appreciated! Here's a link to the Ram build website if you want to see exactly what I'm thinking about getting. Currently waiting to see what the dealer says in regards to financing/leasing prices.

I switched from a 2017 Tacoma to a 2019 1500 Ram. Put a chunk of money into the Tacoma but the lack of power and the automatic tranny was enough to push me over the edge. I ended up paying less for the Ram then the Tacoma new. Plus I had positive equity in the Tacoma so that was more off the purchase price. And I sold some accessories off the Tacoma so that help with a few on the Ram.

Only thing that I miss from the Tacoma is the size going down some trails. The Ram is definitely longer and wider but I deal with it. The aftermarket is also huge for Tacoma and not so much for the Ram, but I’ve been able to get what I need so far.

I do love how nimble the Tacoma is, but at the moment I don't do anything with it that I don't think a bigger truck could handle. I also made sure to try some U-turns during my test drives, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the 1500. I get off road, but I'm not a crazy rock crawler or anything. Thanks for the response!

Two people in the family had a TACO for a while.. Lack of power and the awful transmission pushed them over the edge as well. One has a Crew F150 5.0, and one has a Quad Ram 1500 V8 currently.

I can't understand why the Taco's are so popular. I called then TURD TACO'S (TRD Tacoma!) LOL

I never felt like I ever asked anything of my 2nd gen manual Tacoma that it couldn't easily provide. However, I absolutely call the 3rd gen Tacos the "Turd Gen" for sure. I was a Toyota guy for life before this... Now I'll likely never buy another Toyota again if I can help it. Super disappointed in Toyota that they would sell something like this.

Was given this Tacoma TRD OffRoad XP last spring as a rental while out of town for a month. I was excited cause I was trying to decide on a midsize or full-size truck at the time and I was leaning Tacoma. Hated it. Drove terribly on the highway. Steering was stiff. Highway MPG was worse than my current Ram (about 17-18mpg highway). Definitely drove me to get the Ram and to not get an OffRoad package as well. On the contrary, love my Ram! You'll love it.
Just check your config options for payload and towing limits to make sure you get what you need.

Sounds like the ecodiesel is the perfect truck for your needs. I just got mine a couple weeks ago, only 1500 miles so far but I am really enjoying it. They come with a 5 year 100,000 mile power train warranty so that helped me with the worries of any big problems. This is my first diesel as well, I’ve wanted an ecodiesel since they first came out in 2014. Tows my camper much better than my Hemi Ram did and gets about 15mpg doing it compared to 8.5mpg.

Ram will likely be superior in every way except the AC. Although a Tacoma would probably last a million miles, not sure Ram could match that.
Yeah, I will admit that I'll miss the worry free maintenance of the Tacoma. But, I feel like I'm either stuck with a "dependable" turd/lemon that'll last forever that I hate to drive, or I have to gamble and jump ship to a different truck that I may love driving, but may not last very long... I'm not known for my GOOD luck

How much weight are you towing, and over what kind of terrain? The elevation in CO doesn't help; and the locations I'll be in CO in the summers to teach are around 7,200-9,400 feet, and NOT flat lol

Think there are quite a few of us here that did that upgrade. I swapped my 2016.5 (first couple months of 3rd gen) Taco for a crewcab Bighorn with 5.7L and 4x4 a little less than a month ago. Briefly considered ecodiesel but the prior gen issues plus the higher maintenance scared me off (plus regular gas is so cheap right now). I am getting ~16-17 in mixed driving so far at only 1400 miles so still in the "break in" period which is a little better than I expected.

Like it alot so far. I also have a Wrangler so wasn't much an issue losing the more 'nimble' Taco as I always picked the Wrangler when going on adventures anyways. Power is wayyyy smoother compared to the Taco in addition to the obvious size increase to the back seat, better stereo, smoother ride, better seating position... so yeah, I think it was a good decision so far.

my RV fish house is about 5k lbs dry and 25’ total length including the hitch. I’m in MN so it’s mostly flat. I can’t speak to towing in the mountains as I’ve never done it

40 degree vent temps are pretty nice! :) and a clamp takes 2 minutes and can be removed with no trace.
I'm rather vehicle illiterate but learning. Are you talking about just clamping off where it would mix with the heater core? I'd meant to look up whether that was an easier fix or if it would cause anything to overheat. Just haven't gotten a chance to research it too deeply. There's a LOT of stuff to go through in thinking about jumping to a different manufacturer after being so complacent with a Tacoma.
