Fuel Filter Change - Dealer Ripoff - Southern California

So im at 19k miles and doing my fuel filter change and the dealer quoted me $390.00 and I was like WTF?!?!?! I asked how much the filter was and they are selling it for $60. I called up 2 other dealers near me and they both quoted me $390.00 and the filter was $60. None of them would give me a part number so I looked it up online and it turns out that its just the same old cummins filter that you can get online for $37.49 at dieselfitlersonline....

Once you are under the truck it takes literally 3-5 minutes to change it out, unscrew the cap > remove old filter cartridge > repalce o-ring > install new filter cartidge > screw cap back on... its seriously so easy. Crazy how dealers are charging so much to replace something that is so simple and fast.

That's ridiculous. I feel like there is a diesel tax on all this stuff, you pay a premium for service even though it's really not much different. I don't generally do my own service but I'm planning to do most of it myself. I refuse to pay these prices for basic service.

Yep, just like the $250 oil changes that you can do for $100 at home using proper spec stuff and 10 minutes of your time. There's a HUGE mark-up on their labor for basic maintenance and it's not right.

I'll be doing my first oil change shortly thanks to WxMan! I got the filter for $74CDN taxes in and the oil for $56 for 10 quarts. So $130 exactly plus the fumoto valve. I'm sure a dealer charge is well over $300.

Yep, just like the $250 oil changes that you can do for $100 at home using proper spec stuff and 10 minutes of your time. There's a HUGE mark-up on their labor for basic maintenance and it's not right.

the oil change around here is $180, still expensive but not as bad as yours.

They didn’t quote $390 in the USA. They quoted that in California. Completely different place and monitory system LOL. It’s been a while but I believe it’s about $200 in Idaho at the dealer when I last worked there.

LOL right. California is probably equal pricing to Canada on stuff. Even so, $200 is a giant rip off for a $30 part and at the most 20 minutes of labour.

I let a dealer do the fuel filter change and they added a can of BG fuel additive for $53. I went ballistic, both over the ridiculous cost and the fact that I never gave anyone permission to pour ANYTHING in my fuel tank. I run a very high quality additive anyway. Also, never let the dealer top off you DEF. They’ll want to charge something like $23 a gallon, which is like 9 x what I pay at Buccees. And no, I’m not paying the $53. I’m all for a fair profit, but some of the charges are obscene.

Transfer case and differential services are recommended and the advisor can look them up by Vin number in dealer net which is software FCA provides to the dealerships but the advisor has to be smart enough to use it properly and sadly most do not… when I was an advisor I was big on up selling preventative maintenance but I would do it the legal way. Educate the customer, show them the manufactures suggestions, and then let them decide. It’s their vehicle and their money. Most of the time customers would do it.

Dealer DEF is a rip off and while BG products are good that’s BS that they tried to slip that in the bill… No way I’d pay for that either.

Mopar is selling the 3 synthetic oil changes for $100. Do it myself for $45 tops.

Were talking about EcoDiesels. The filter alone is $45, MSRP at most dealers is $80. It also takes 8.5 quarts of oil.

Wow, I didn't know that there was such a huge difference between the two types of engines in terms of oil change costs. Thank you for clarifying (I feel like an idiot now) lol

I don’t know where you hail from however when I was up in BC in the lower Fraser Valley I made sure to go across the line occasionally and just so happened to get services done there, of course you have to look at the exchange rate as well.

The one thing I didn’t do was take 4+ five gallon fuel cans to fill up and **** off everyone behind me in line. Seriously, thats something that the border shouldn’t allow, the fumes that are in some peoples cars/vans when they did that...

Haha all good. You definitely pay a bit of a diesel tax but service can be done for reasonable prices if you do it yourself.
