I was taking a couple of comparison photos for my dad to compare my 2003 GMC 1500HD SLT Quadrasteer with our new 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn. Once I did, I was struck by how much the new Ram bears a resemblance to my 16-year-old GMC. If you were to take the badges off, the new Ram looks like a natural evolution of the GMC over many years (more than the new GMC does, actually). Check it out!

Your spot on with your assessment!! I guess old is now the new!!!

Wow
That’s interesting....maybe Ram hired a old GMC designer :p

I think I've studied the new Ram too hard. All I see are the differences.
Totally open to my perspective being off...

I also don't see it but the colour sure gives it an illusion at a quick glance.

Some of the items I noticed that felt derivative (not the same, but similar):
  • Finned grille design
  • Expressive bumper design (the 2003 GMC was one of the first trucks to have a non-straight front bumper)
  • Hood strakes (much more pronounced on the Ram)
  • Shark fin (you can see an early version on the GMC)
  • Fender flares (more subtle/finished on the Ram)
  • Rear fender shape (more pronounced on the GMC)
  • Bed rail caps
  • Tonneau cover style
  • 4x4 emblem placement
Some Ram features that show the progression of truck design language and technology over the years:
  • Taller hood and bedsides
  • Steeper windshield rake
  • Larger wheels
  • Retractable step bars
  • LED lighting
  • More pronounced grille
  • Fully-integrated antenna
  • Masking of B-pillar
Thanks for humoring me :)

Having owned 3 GMCs back to 2003, I only see color similarities. And this is my first Ram. But I promise you, this Ram rides better than any GMC I've ever owned and on par with every german car I've ever owned.

But at the end of the day, there is only so much that can be done to a huge box on wheels. Now, I do see similarities to the current Tundra. And I have not one problem with that similarity.

Trucks are trucks so we can definitely find similarities with all brands. Love the color!
