Why get 12 inch vs 8.4 inch?

Aside from the physical size of the screen and including NAV... Is there a difference in (software) operation between the 12 inch and 8.4 inch Uconnect?

Due to physical size, does the 12 inch displace some physical buttons so RAM has to move those physical buttons to software buttons on the screen?

Thanks!!

most of the AC features have been shuffled about. all of the seat temps have been moved to screen. you can over/under the same info thats on the 8 inch screen. so you can have backup and stereo over under for example.

more common I would imagine is over/undering phone and radio or nav and phone. the media screen has a button press to replace album art with nav.

I personally find the 8 inch screen is sharper & brighter than the 12 inch. You also get more usable screen for CarPlay/AA because the 8 inch is larger horizontally than the 12" screen.

12" just looks cooler and gives you the ability to full screen native apps (media, nav) and split screen. I prefer the overall look of it, but the functionality of it isn't really better for me.

have you sat in and spent a few minutes a truck with either screen yet?

in reality the 8.4 is all one would need if you only want to view a single screen. the 12 inch allows you to stack two 8.4 on top of each other.

lots of folks care not for the 12 as it is set up in the '19s for individual reasons. i have had zero issues with the larger screen, and like how FCA interfaced it in the truck.

you need the 8.4, you'll want the 12.

I prefer the 8.4 screen myself. I don't have to take my eyes and attention off of the road to make minor adjustments by finding the right area on the 12 inch touch screen. Does it look good, sure does, I just prefer the knobs.

Same here. No issues with it in 18+ months.

I was given a loaner with a 12" while my 1500 was in for repairs. Having driven both, the 12" is fun and it looks great, but it's still an early adopter luxury feature (especially if you rely on Android Auto or Carplay).

As more cars ship with these larger (11 inches and up) console displays, it will become a must-have feature as they start designing more of the native user experience to take advantage of the space available. Maybe that'll drop in an update for the 12" display one of these days.

Love my 12" screen. For me it came down to having a larger surface when using navigation, very handy to have the increased awareness when viewing real time traffic, etc. Caveat is that you can only do that with the built in navi. If they were to offer CarPlay (and therefore Waze) in full screen, it would be killer.

I do love having split screen with Waze on the top screen, and the bottom half dedicated to audio, or weather.

The benefit of the 8.4 is having dedicated buttons for seat cooling/heating, and the higher res screen (it is a tad sharper than the 12").

Cheers,

I don't knock the 12", or question why some prefer it. It's cool to have the option, especially in a truck. But for me, I wanted the 8.4" ... I still like knobs and buttons. Don't tell her I said it, but the thought of my wife dabbling with the screen to adjust things on her side wasn't to my liking. I love her, but she makes tech much harder than it needs to be. Enjoy those RAM interiors!

I'm still getting used to the 12" display and figuring out how I want it set up. I do like that you can configure a row of "soft" buttons however you like.

So, for example, I have the seat heaters on the right and left side icons, and the steering wheel heat, plus surround cam, nav, and carplay. But once it warms up, I can replace the heater icons with something else useful. Maybe Contacts or Weather or whatever. I haven't even looked at all of the available apps yet.

The split screen is cool, but I do wish more of the native apps (like the cameras) were full screen portrait oriented to take advantage of it. Big nav is nice, of course.

So yeah, the 12" is still a bit of a gimmick for now, but it's pretty slick, and I think it fits into the rest of the interior design pretty well. And for my Longhorn trim especially, it modernizes the otherwise rustic cowboy-*** flourishes. I dig it. On the other hand, if i lived somewhere cold, where I was likely to be wearing non-capacitive gloves a lot, it might get annoying to have zero knobs and switches beyond just HVAC.

I love the 12 inch screen. had the 8.4 in last truck and would pick the 12 inch again. most controls still have physical buttons on the outside of the screen. the ability to have split screen is awesome. native nav in full screen is great, although I usually use waze. I agree with the statement about the backup camera though, no reason for it not to be full screen. hopefully that will change with a future update but I have no hope of that happening, lol
