Rear end slight wobble/shake. And MDS

I'm not sure what this could be so maybe someone would be able to help me out.

When driving pretty much at any speed I can feel a wobble/shake resonate from the rear end of the truck. This is at every speed and even on very smooth roads. You can see the bed of the truck independently moving but it feels like this is resonating into the back of my seat the entire time. It's not a crazy shake but it's enough to make the ride not very enjoyable.
I just got new tires and had them balanced, but that did not alleviate the issue one bit.


Also, turning off MDS is a game changer for my truck personally when it comes to shifting, vibrations in the pedal, etc. Turning off MDS for my truck personally makes it operate way smoother. Just wanted to notate that for those that are annoyed with the vibrations in the pedal.

How did you turn off MDS?

Place the truck in drive and on the gear selecter on the right hand side of your steering wheel hit the -minus button. On your display it'll notate 1 through 8 as you click. Hit the minus until it shows -8 on your cluster(bottom right corner). At that point your MDS will be off, you'll have to do this each time you drive the truck but it only takes a second each time.

Twice, they are not great of course. They say they can't replicate the issue but I'm not surprised as they probably drive the car for 20 seconds. and are hoping there isn't an issue so they don't have to deal with it. I tried another dealer as well but they won't answer the phone and when I left a message for a rep the department never got back to me. I called that service department 3 times.

With the dealer I went to I even had them ride with me and they stated they would just balance the tires and I honestly don't know if they really did. I don't trust the service department and I hate that I feel that way.

I'm almost inclined to take my truck to a trusted shop and have them see if they can find the issue for me without messing with the truck to void a warranty. If they can maybe help me gauge the issue I could just take it to the dealer at that point and let them know what needs to be done. I'm not sure if that would work in my favor so if anyone has any input on that just let me know.

mds on... will reset also if you put vehicle in park as well, and you'll have to reset from that mode as well.

I don't know all of the abilities and systems involved in MDS but the term means Multi-Displacement System. It cuts down the cylinders to save on mileage, I'm sure there could be more technicalities to it when daily driving.

I take mine back in tomorrow to see if they can help look further into it.

Such a weird feeling trying to research what this could be. I feel it at literally every speed. Even when barely moving it feels like I'm just going over speed bumps. And when I reach around 60 it's a full on rear end shake, even has my leg shaking it can get so intense. But the intensity also comes and goes.

I'm going to at least push for them to do a road force balance and alignment check. I'm going to have them at least do one step at a time and hopefully we can go through a process of elimination. Now itll just be up to the dealership on their willingness to do that.

I have the same issue. Bigger the tires worse it shakes, you Can balance the tires until you're blue in the face, I think there is something out of spec in the rear end itself. Mines the worse right around 58 or 59 MPH you can see the bed vibrating side to side. It did it with the stock Bridgstones, replaced those with continentals still does it and I have had them road forced and balanced 3 times by 2 different shops, The last shop specializes in balancing tires for track cars and is where all Porsche owners take their cars for setting up the track wheels/tires. I believe AAM builds the rear ends for these trucks, which they also built the rear ends for the previous generation GM trucks with the chevy shake. Most guys that fixed or improved their chevy shake, replaced the axle shafts in the rear end, Another article was pointing to improperly set up rear ends from the factory that did not have any total turning preload. Meaning they didn't pre-load the bearings and they were too lose causing vibrations. Both avenues are very expensive and kind of a shot in the dark at this point. Worth it if it does fix it but a huge waste of money if it doesn't improve things.

Eliminate something, support the axle remove the tires. Run it up if it’s still noisy/vibrates it’s the drivetrain not the tires. Some rams have a driveshaft issue

I can try that. If it helps diagnose at all it does it literally just barely moving even at 2mph. It's like a slow roll over rocks, the whole truck feels likes its rocking as I move. Then at faster speeds itll just shake.

Well my truck doesn't have that problem. Other than the ac not cooling like I think it should my truck is a good truck. Like they said you might have an out of balance drive shaft or the u-joint might be bad. Any high freak in the drive train could cause the problem. I read where one member said the bolts in his drive shaft were lose.

While its up 'saftely and secure' If you can get your hands on a mechanics stethoscope, listen to the diff and axle bearings. If its producing noise, it will be quite loud. make sure the driveshaft is intact.

It's at the dealer now so we will see what they say. The service manager rode with me and I also took it on the interstate to show him the shake and how it intensifies. He more or less didnt think much of it but said they will raise it up and take a look. I'll report back my findings once I've gotten it back and driven it on the interstate as well.
