Rumors have been swirling for the past few months about the all-new Ram 1500 getting a split tailgate with integrated loading ramps. When the 2019 Ram 1500 debuted last month, both features were notably missing. What we do know is that the split tailgate is coming, as mentioned in the order guide as a multifunction tailgate.
These patent drawings show a split tailgate divided 50/50 that could be opened to the side or dropped down like a normal tailgate in individual sections. This will allow the owner more flexibility in loading cargo and could also be useful is the rumored loading ramps do become available.
Integrated bed ramps
While it is safe to say at this point that the split tailgate is definitely coming the one thing that insiders have kept quiet on is the rumored bed ramps. 5thGenRams has found patent documents filed by FCA on March 13th, 2014 and approved on June 30th, 2015. This patent illustrates an integrated storable ramp system that slides in channels on the floor of the bed and inside of the tailgate.
As you can see in the patent drawing above when stowed the ramps would sit flush with the floor of the truck bed with the ability to slide them back utilizing channels on the tailgate.
When extended all the way back they would then lock into the lateral track in the tailgate. You would also be able to slide them to the desired width along the lateral track and lock them into place there as shown in the image below.
While we haven’t heard anything concrete about the stowable loading ramp system it is something we hope is coming. This is a feature that would be very beneficial for people with ATV’s, Dirtbikes, Motorcycles etc. No matter where you are you would always have your ramps with you without them taking up room in the truck box.
Stay tuned to 5thGenRams.com as we will bring you more information on these features along with all the latest news about the 5th Generation Ram trucks as soon as it becomes available.
