I’m looking at getting a new set of Falken Wildpeak at3w, stock size 275/55 R20. My question is has anyone had any experience with the XL tires vs the load range D? Looking at the specs, the XL tires are 48lbs and have 13/32 tread depth. The SL load range D are 56lbs with 18/32 tread depth.

I’m thinking the gas mileage is better on the XL while ride will be better on the Load range D tires. Anyone have experience between the two?

Didnt realize they made the AT3W anymore since they released the AT4W

The load range D will also be a stiffer ride than XL, along with the mpg drop. Obviously a half ton wouldn’t come near the limit of the XL, but some people prefer the stiffer sidewall of LT tires when towing.

Mileage and ride will be better on the XL tires.

I bought a set of OEM A/T3Wa tires online through Discount Tire, as they had treated me well for 6 years / 55k+ miles and I didn't need the fuel economy hit of heavier tires. After I'd paid for them and arrived for my appointment, they informed me that they weren't able to get them. I eventually had the A/T4W XL tires installed (at no extra charge, which was a significant price break). They're only 3 lbs heavier per tire, unlike the D range. That's still just enough that I can notice the difference in acceleration and see a drop in mileage, especially in town. Falken engineered these with a much stiffer sidewall than the previous generation, so turn-in is super solid. And the XLs have a longer mileage warranty than the Ds (65k vs. 60k).

I've run D and E tires on 3/4-ton trucks in the past, and I wouldn't put them on a 1/2-ton. But that's because I wouldn't be driving a 1/2-ton if I were towing enough to need those tires. YMMV!
