Unusual discover in drive shaft

Was greasing up the shaft, until I saw this sponge like thing inside the drive shaft…..no way this is from factory is it ? If it is can some one please school me on the reason why theirs a sponge inside the drive shaft tube? IMG_1441.jpg

Looks like protective shipping foam that got left in the shaft from the assembly line. It is too light to have any vibration damping properties IMO.
 
I ended up just leaving it in there.

maybe it is used to reduce vibration like the fellas above stated.

I have the rear end clunk at low speed when stopping/getting off the line and I think I might need to do this too. How do you go about those boot clamps? They look like one time use.
I've never taken one of these out on a DT body style, what's the procedure like?
