UConnect5 and Alexa question

For Alexa to work in the UConnect5 (turn on lights at home, etc.), is the only option to pay for the hotspot or can I use my phone's hotspot feature? If so, how? I already have unlimited data on my phone and $20+ a month for another hotspot seems to be a little pricey. I'm still in my trial period though so I'll continue to use it for now. Just wondering if there is another option. TIA.

I must be missing something... I can connect my phone's hotspot for OTA updates but that doesn't seem to work for the Alexa feature.

Oh, then I guess that's all the wifi is used for on there. Guess they want you to pay for the connected vehicle.
