A train derailed in Wyoming County near Attica on Thursday, according to the Attica Police Department and the Norfolk Southern Corporation.According to a representative's statement from Norfolk Southern, the train was heading eastbound transporting automobiles from Buffalo to Mechanicville when it derailed around 4:15 p.m. The train's two crew members- an engineer and a conductor- sustained unknown but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.The train consisted of two locomotives and 43 rail cars, all filled with automobiles. There was no hazardous materials being transported. According to NS, both of the engines derailed, as did approximately ten rail cars.Heavy smoke had been reported from the scene on East Main Street Road in Attica.Norfolk Southern says they are working closely with first responders, and have deployed environmental specialists to help clean up diesel fuel that spilled from at least one of the locomotives.Thursday night, crews worked to clear debris from East Main Street and Route 238, which are expected to repoen later in the evening, according to the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office.The Sheriff's Office reports that cleanup of the rail cars could take days.The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.Injuries reported after train derails near Attica (at http://www.whec.com/news/train-derails-near-attica/4790511/ )(see attachment)
