I experienced this consistently over many years with city driving a 3.5 eco F150.
Highway driving was down mpg in sport mode though. I think due to throttle sensitivity and resulting dithering - top gear would be called up in either mode.
My theory is sport mode keeps gears lower and rpms higher, thus relying less on boost to get going at part throttle. Low rpm torque Target vs same target but at higher rpm. After a bit of city stop / starts additional fuel is added to the trim to combat lspi and high IATs associated with high boost & low rpm.
If you’re seeing the same in your Rebel that would be my same theory.
