Software updates for non-factory 8.4 Uconnect

I currently have the 5 inch system and just ordered my 8.4 Uconnect upgrade and it should be here in a couple days. My question is how do you go about getting software updates for the radio? If I go to the Uconnect site and put in my VIN, it will show that I have the 5 inch radio. So how are others getting software updates for these radios if they are not original to the truck?
