Removing sliding tray in center consol

I have slowly been removing the layers of junk detail shops lathered on the interior for previous owner. I am trying to get the sliding cup/change holder out is there a trick to this?

If I remember, you need to get something to carefully start separating the two plastic pieces just below the push button on the slider. Once you get a finger in there, carefully pull or slide a trim tool around as much as you can to release the clips. No secret other than the clips are very tight
