Recommendations for brand of mechanical locking rear differential advice.

I recently purchased a 2019 Ram 1500 4x4.
I live in upstate New York near Ft.Drum and we get a LOT of snow.
I searched for almost a month trying to find a Ram 1500 Classic or New 5th gen Ram With a factory mechanical anti-spin rear differential with no luck.
It has 3.92 gears ( still trying to find a source to determine towing capacity and maybe somewhere to get a copy of original window sticker )
There are several different options for aftermarket anti-spin/posi set ups and I am hoping someone has done it and their experience with the modification.

Do you have the e-locker? If so, you may be out of luck. But I'd start by looking at the Detroit Tru-trac part number 917A730
 
Since 2009 Ram has used Brake locking differentials (BLD). I can’t find it in writing but I believe for now that this applies to ALL differentials, including your open differential rear, which is good news. The BLD works kinda like a limited slip diff.

Would you please try something for me and verify that your open differential has the BLD?
Please go to somewhere you can get all wheels in the grass, go to ESC Partial Off - hit ESC toggle down (truck with squiggly lines behind it toggle) or go full off - press and hold ESC toggle down (approx. 5 sec) till get ESC message. Now go to 4WD and burn out and get out to see if you have 2 dirt skids where BOTH rears spun. And please also try this in 2WD.

If you do in fact have a BLD and get both rears spinning, no need to worry about getting a locking diff. unless you still want it for Off Road.
Note, you NEED to go partial or full off on ESC so you don’t get power reduction and wheel braking from your ESC system to check your rear diff. with wheel spin.

Mechanical locking ( Anti-Spin ) was still an option I believe on 2019 5th gen with 6 bolt axles but I couldn’t find one.
I just prefer to have a locking/anti-spin differential in a truck especially in my area.
I have Fallen AT/X 3 tires on it now and they are awesome in the snow, however if any of you remember New York made national news just before Thanksgiving last year with a massive snowstorm/lake effect snow combination that dumped 72.3 inches of snow in my area in 24 hours.
I still had my Challenger then and it took 3-1/2 DAYS to dig it out.
Right now I have 6 70lb bags of sand in the bed located above the rear axle and for the most part do not have to put it in 4 High.
However we got another 5+ feet of snow before Christmas I believe and it would have been much easier to get around with a limited slip rear axle.

It can help get you moving, but for people who aren't used to driving a vehicle with a locking differential, or limited slip, it can also get you into trouble real quick. Both wheels spinning at same time will cause the rear end to come out from under you. I've found most people do not know how to control this. Personally, I prefer it, and will purposely induce the rear to swing out.

Holding it down for 5 seconds has NEVER worked for me. I can only hit it once and it still stays partly enabled.

I like the locker and limited slip also because I’m in mud and hills a lot. If you do have the BLD on your rear differential, it works great. People do dual rear burnouts with just the BLD.

It might take longer than 5 seconds. Engine running, stopped, Try hitting once for partial off, release, pause and then try holding ESC down till getting an alert for full off.

I feel like I tried all of that, but I will try it again.

I know I can turn all traction control off with my tuner, but that's different.

Most cars\trucks I had I could do the 5 second toggle but they were other manufacturers.

Would be curious if others with the LSD can do it.

Be VERY Careful subjecting your e-lock to that kind of abuse. It is for short term emergency situations to get you Un-Stuck.
You will eventually grenade the center section and possibly even brake and axle when it explodes.
It is a electrical lock system and it is not designed to take continuous abuse from an engine with more than 400ftlbs of torque.
That is why a mechanical or air locker center section is much better.

Even holding down the button doesn't completely disable all traction control and ESP. it just significantly reduces it. The only way to really fully disable it is with a tuner or TazerDT.

And pretty sure holding the button down only works in 4wd, not 2wd. Unless you have a TazerDT.

I launch in 4-high with rear axle locked at the drag strip all the time. Haven't had any issues

I’m not sure what abuse to e-locker you are talking about. I use it for when I need it off road.
The dual rear burnouts I have seen others do is with there trucks (with locker NOT engaged, only using BLD).

Do you mind elaborating on the e-locker abuse you are claiming.

I don’t know about the fuse or TazerDT. Do you have any references for what you say?

I am curious about the 4WD vs 2WD, but I know others have at least partial disabled the ESC in 2WD. I will try to fully disable in 2WD.

You can partially disable in 2wd, but holding the button down longer does nothing. The TazerDT will fully disable in 2 or 4 wd. Personally, I wouldn't pull a fuse.

Yeah definitely don't pull a fuse to disable traction control imo.
These trucks have too many electronics god knows what else might be tied to it.
Would be an embarrassing way to put your truck into limp home mode for sure.

I think i'm going to use my tuner to turn off traction control. I wonder how\if it would drive differently considering I have LSD. I am probably mistaken but I thought I read it was electronically controlled.

Once again, just using the traction control buttons without any other device such as TazerDT, does not fully disable TCS/ESP. First push reduce traction control, allowing the wheels to spin. Holding it down in 4wd reduces traction control and ESP. but does not completely disable.

TazerDT will fully disable TCS/ESP and the only way to get them back in is to turn off the truck and let it reset for a few minutes.
