Evening fellow ram owners. Recently I started noticing a loud / obnoxious noise coming from I think my rear end. I only hear it when I’m around 35+ mph, it’s like a deep humming noise is the best I can describe it. My truck is 22 ram 1500 4x2 with around 37k miles. I wanted to get on here first before I took it to the dealership to see if anyone may know what it could be. I’m not sure if it’s related to the rear end or not.

I’d for sure not drain fluid. Leave that stuff in there so the dealer has nothing to argue about since you’re well under powertrain warranty. Not your problem.

Beans beans the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot.

if warranty was out then I d do a drain and fill. with warranty , just let the dealer do that first IMO. Keep us posted too.

I took this picture last night after I got home from the gym. Looks like it might be leaking fluid as well.

Is this a Hemi? Another possibility is a malfunction in the active noise cancellation system.

By the look of your picture, I’d guess the carrier bearing due to the seal failure.

I just had trouble with mine. 2019 1500 with 80k miles. Just out of warranty and cost close to 1500 to rebuild the rear end.

UPDATE: Dealer replaced both axle bearings and carrier bearings.

I picked it up today. Drove it for about 5 mins and noticed a whine still. Took it back and had a couple senior technicians ride with me and they heard it but wasn’t sure what it was. Told me to drop it off again and they will look at it. It’s safe to say I’m pretty annoyed at this point

did they do the pinion bearings? thats what was wrong with mine.

Is the whine/humming only present at a certain speed range? i.e. 30-45 and not at 50-65 and under load? It goes away when you let off the gas? If so, they have your gear mesh wrong. A tech experienced with axle building will adjust this so gear noise is at a speed that not normally driven.

My truck has a little noise under only light deceleration at 32 and 62 mph. Likely a slight issue with pinion depth/preload. Didn’t start until around 50k and hasn’t got any worse at almost 77k now.

The Achilles heal of the ram rear end has always been related to the stupid crush sleeve for pinion bearing preload.

If/when mine needs rebuild it will get pinion spacers instead of a crush sleeve and I’ll add a limited slip at that point. Sadly a mission option on mine.

UPDATE:

They told me my truck is done. They said it was my backlash in my diff ( tbh I didn’t know what that was, had to look it up ). Drove it home sounds like everything is fixed. But I’m not happy with how they reinstalled the diff cover. Very sloppy. See picture
