Thought I had a wheel bearing go, but it turned out the noise is coming from the rear differential. Sounds like that needs a rebuild, but have not dug into what is bad/worn in there. Anyone have have this issue and what ended up needing to be replaced? I'm hoping to get parts ordered before tearing it apart. Thanks.

Are you still within your 5 year 60k mile powertrain warranty?

You'd first have to know exactly what kind of rear axle these trucks have. I asked that question a couple of weeks ago on a forum, can't remember if it was this one or not. Absolutely no answer-I don't think many owners know either. It looks like a derivative of the old mopar corporate 9 1/4" rear axle, the one with a stop sign-shaped cover held on by 12 bolts. Those were used in dodge trucks starting in around 1975 or so and were used from then until at LEAST 2009, and maybe later. Hell, the current rear end may actually be that but with some extra beef cast into the housing.

I had my pinion bearing go on mine. Just bought a overhaul bearing kit and rwhich replacxes all bearings, just not axles.
where did you get the overhaul kit? I am having a hard time finding kits for the 5th gens. Yukon is the only one I found. Plenty are listed for 4th gen. It looks like there is at least one bearing that does look different between the two kits.

I bought mine from rockauto.com. It was Motive Gear.

Ah, from the link above I see they're still referring to it as the chrysler 9 1/4.

Yep, that's what I was getting at. At different points I've seen it referred to as an aam rearend, a mopar rearend, and a dana rearend. Perhaps aam made them for a while for mopar, or perhaps people were simply confused by the fact that the hd trucks do in fact get aam axles and thought the 1/2 tons did too?

What was the noise that you were hearing? My 2020 (2WD) have developed a vehicle speed sensitive whine that I mainly hear during low speed accel or decel. I have been thinking it was a front wheel bearing but there is no play in either front bearing. My son thinks the noise is coming from the rear.

I think it depends on the exact truck. All non-TRX 1/2 ton trucks are 9.25" Mopar rear ends. AAM I think made some of the 2500/3500 rear ends? Not as familiar with the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks as I wish I was.

The TRX trucks (and maybe the upcoming RHOs?) have a Dana 60 rear end.

Yeah, AAM has made all 3/4 and 1 ton dodge/ram rearends since 2003 as far as I know. I seem to recall that hemi r/t's got a dana 60 with 4.10 gears, too. Nothing wrong with a dana 60, they're pretty strong.
