2 years ago I bought a 2020 RAM 1500 (3.6L) with 10,000 miles on it. It was well cared for and like new. The truck just hit 59,000 miles. During the 2 years I've owned it, I've put a new transmission in it, and the truck goes in the shop next week for an engine teardown because it's making a loud ticking noise (guessing something in the valve train). Thankfully all of this happened while the truck is still under warranty. However, it has me thinking about how the truck will perform for the next 60,000 miles?

I like the truck. It's comfortable, spacious, drives nice, etc. But, if the next 60,000 miles will be anything like I've experienced, I'd be really disappointed. I'm considering dumping the truck once it's repaired.

I'm curious what other owners experience is with durability?

I have a 2020 also, but I went with the Hemi. Just hit 60,000 miles and it still feels like it did when I drove it off the lot brand new.

that 10,000 miles from the last owner must have been hard.

there have not been many here complaining about the 3.6

You would think it had a hard life, but it was literally spotless and like new. there was never a drawbar in the hitch receiver, not a scratch on the truck. Who knows...

My 2020 just received a new transmission at 167,000 miles. This is our third Ram. Trucks are fairly reliable, but having said that I would never buy one without an extended warranty. I see the extended warranty as calling Ram's bluff on their reliability, and so far I've won.

just saying, 13k miles 50 days non stop driving round trip, about 6-10 hours a day. drove through salt, sticky mud, slick mud, millions of potholes that could shake the truck apart or cause breakdowns.
it was a tough trip for the truck for sure and even now i'm still trying to clear my transfer case from the mud.

but every day, the truck started at first try, and the transmission, transfer case, and everything never missed a beat. i had absolutely zero issue and zero breakdown the entire trip and after. oh, and i did this whole trip by myself. single person, single truck, no backup, no support. to some people what I did was crazy, i guess, especially with a truck that so many people have all kinds of problem with. but the truck didn't let me down, even though i was going at a speed that i probably shouldn't have.

Every manufacturer gets the occasional bad apple. Not trying to be a wise guy, but with that track record I would dump the truck at the end of the warranty period. The best indicator of a vehicle's reliability after the warranty expires is the vehicle's warranty before the warranty expires. It's still young enough to have some decent trade in value at Carmax (they are the best in terms of giving you a fair offer, in my experience), and then you can go find another vehicle, or at least have a downpayment on one.

Sorry that this experience has not been great. Knock on wood, our 2020 has been good. Good luck.

They are typically pretty reliable but you should get rid of that one. The previous performance of your truck is more likely to predict its future performance than the overall reliability of the model. If mine had multiple issues during the warranty period I would get rid of it.

Quick update: the dealership is replacing a cam and a rocker arm. Apparently a bearing went out on one of the rocker arms causing the ticking noise.
