Hi Guys,

Looking for some help. Apologies for my terminology. I’m mechanically minded (plumber) but useless with cars.

I’ve been having a bit of a rubbing sound for the last few days on my passenger side. Took it to my trusted local mechanic and he advised me that the problem is the passenger side stub shaft. He said it’s pretty common on these trucks. He said it’s not something they typically do and advised me to take it to a transmission shop.

I took a look under the truck and it’s very loose. Also looks way more rusted than the drivers side. See pics.

I want to know if this is something I can undertake with my father in law. He’s very good with cars. Have any of you guys also came across this issue?

You may want to check out this video, there is at least one or two others on that channel previously as well which goes into detail, he tries to replace it and apparently its not for the faint of heart!

Looks little crusty.
I would apply generous amounts of penetrating oil, drive it some and repeat that couple times, then go for it, specially if your father in law is handy with cars.
The stub shaft is not available from mopar, there is a Canadian company that sell them, probably some other online sources also nowadays.
Consider subscribing to Alldatadiy for service procedures and torque specs.

edit: I greased up mine while replacing the passenger side bearing hub.

Thank you very much for your insight.

Do you think I definitely have to change the stub shaft or should I remove the CV joint and inspect the shaft and potentially (fingers crossed) just replace the CV joint?

Also are you aware of the name of the Canadian company. I am actually in Canada. Thank you.

Inspect the stub shaft, the splines might still be OK and just need lubricating.
