Also...with my Ram's as-configured payload of 1,069 lb, minus maybe 25 lbs for a few accessories and items I always carry around, minus another 400 lb for myself, my wife, and our two dogs, minus another 200 lb for typical cargo when the 4 of us are road-tripping, I'm left with 444 lb of payload. With 15% tongue weight, I'd only be rated for pulling a 3,000 lb trailer on a long-haul trip. My realistic maximum at only 10% tongue weight, e.g., when it's just me moving the boat around, would be 7,840 lb.

If I were towing on a regular basis, and/or if I had anything heavy to move, I'd be in a 3/4-ton or 1-ton, without question.
I told her only partly joking, if we want to Tow I need to get new truck, probably a 3500 Tradesman. I wouldn't see the reason to jump from a 1500 to 2500, if I need that junk already just go to a 3500 imo.
I know "almost" 0 about towing, just that with my current truck I will be very limited and I can't just go buying and camper\trailer off craigslist under 12k which I can "tow" as it will likely go way over my payload which is around 430 for everything that would be inside my truck, people estimated 50lbs gear. I COULD squeeze another 30-50lbs if I remove stuff from my truck to tow but if 30 lbs is going to break my truck I shouldn't be towing that much anyways.

My tires are 114H which should be fine obviously only towing rarely and not very far I would expect anyways but tires are cheap compared to a 2023 3500

Nice, look-y there, someone who understands tow ratings, and why they are almost pointless for a half-ton because you'll almost always be payload-limited first - always if there is more than just 1 person in the cab.

Depends what you tow. I tow a pontoon boat that weighs 5,000 lb with gear, and 2 fat people in the front seat. Plenty of capacity. I tow it with my Durango. A huge camper, that's a different story.

I don’t think math cares what you tow. If you’re over payload, you’re over payload with 5k lbs of hammers, you’re over payload with 5k lbs of feathers.

Duh. I'm saying if you don't tow a 10,000 lb camper, and 5,000 lbs of gear, a 1500 is fine for towing. It's ridiculous to say it's not. Of course you need to take into account what you will be towing. My brother in law has a 38 ft off shore. He needs a 2500. I don't.
