Has anyone tried going a full year on a single oil filter? I'm going to switch to the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter (supposedly is good for 20k miles)
since changing the filter is a PITA, once a year sounds nice. I typically don't go over 12-15k miles per year, and I only use full synthetic oil. Anyone have thoughts on this? Of course changing the only will still be done every 6-8k miles.

Is that method going to cause you serious issues in the future? Not likely if you are using a high quality oil and stick to those intervals. People do less maintenance than that all the time and never experience issues. Is it as good as changing the filter and draining all of the old oil out at every change? Probably not. I have not tried that nor seen an oil analysis of oil in that scenario. I change the filter at every oil change and do not find it to be that difficult.

Not having the 90 pound body I did when I was eighteen, I can appreciate your desire to avoid the pain of changing the oil filter. I have done it when my oil change is due in the good weather and my schedule allows time for me to do it myself.

In this case the major dynamic considerations are capacity of the filter to hold contamination and the ability to capture the finest particles over term. For some filters there's a compromise between the two requirements. Based on various information the filter you listed should do the job for extended oil changes. However, the longer an engine is in service there's the possibility of increasing contaminated oil during each change cycle. You would want to avoid the risk that the oil filter reached its dirt capacity and then bypass dirty oil.

These are unknowns, of course, but as long as you know the risks you can manage oil and filter changes appropriately. Keep in mind, also, that prolonging oil filter changes could void a warranty repair beyond 10,000 miles on the engine.

I always did the same but for whatever reason the oil filter access is beyond stressing for me. But I have the same concerns regarding the the life of an oil filter for an entire year.

Maybe I'll just stick with the toughGuard and change twice a year. The way I was thinking is that if there were ever a warranty issue...I think Fram would have to own up to it but I'm sure that would just be a headache that I wouldn't need either way. Thanks guys!

I change the oil and filter annually (7K miles per year). Given that I use PUP and a Mobil 1 EP filter, I could probably go two years if FCA didn’t require annual intervals (Lifetime MaxCare).
