What is recommended for these trucks? And is it worth the extra 15 min drive to save money and go with th synthetic blend 70 vs the full synthetic 145 for 3..
Had a service guy tell me before that these trucks don’t need full synthetic but I bet he was just trying to save himself money

This is going to spark a debate but it doesn't matter what kind of oil you are putting in syn vs blend what the difference is how long before it breaks down.

If you plan on getting changes every 3-5k miles under regular conditions you can use a blend.

For the small price difference (and the fact that I do changes myself cheaper) I only use full syn and when I change my oil it always has a ton of life left in it.

Definitely make sure you keep oil in your truck.
I'm around 1500 miles into my first oil change (changed it at 2.5k miles) and I burned through a little less then a whole quart of 0w20 Mobile 1 full syn. I have a 5.7 for reference.

I purchased the THREE FULL SYNTHETIC changes for $145. Includes the oil filter. Dealer here does free tire rotations anyway. you have TWO YEARS to use the 3.

the 3 for $70 is just conventional dino oil. Dealer here uses Pennzoil.

That DOES NOT sound normal. You've burned a quart of oil in 4,000 miles ? ? ?

No I didn't burned a quart of oil in 4k miles. I burned a quart of oil in 1500 miles.
I changed my oil at 2,245 miles and I checked my oil at 4k miles on the mark and was almost at the bottom of the add oil on the dipstick (which is 1 quart down if at the bottom of the marks)

This is actually normal per Ram. I wouldn't consider it normal, but i'm definitely still in the break in period so i'm going with it.

This is from the owners manual
NOTE: A new engine may consume some oil during its first few thousand miles (kilometers) of operation. This should be considered a normal part of the break-in and not interpreted as an indication of difficulty. Please check your oil level with the engine oil indicator often during the break in period. Add oil as required.

This is from various TSBs which keep getting updated with newer years, but same oil consumption guide lines but prefaces it as
**MODELS: This bulletin applies to all 2012-2016 FCA US LLC vehicles equipped with gasoline engines.**

Oil Consumption

**The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles listed above is 1 quart (0.946 liter) in 2,000 miles (3,200 km) for the 1st 50,000 miles (80,467 km). For vehicles with more then 50,000 miles (80,467 km) the acceptable oil consumption for engines is 1 quart (0.946 liter) in 750 miles (1,207 km).**

They are current facing a class action lawsuit about oil consumption and appear to be losing and will likely be paying out some money but i'm sure not enough to people who had major problems between oil changes.

I haven't used a drop of oil in 3,000 miles, so I'd say a quart per 1500 miles in yours is excessive. What model year is yours? Hemi or V6?

It's a 1500 5'7 bed Limited with a 5.7 eTorque fully loaded except trailer brake.

I have a heavy foot, ive taken it up to 120MPH a few times but not for extended periods by any means.
I also have a catch can but that's only going to catch oil that would be considered lost anyways.

You said you haven't used any in 3k miles, are you still using the original oil? That crap was thicker then my brand new fully Syn oil no idea what kind of thicker oil they threw in these things at the factory.

The factory fill would have been 0W20 I take it, as that is what on the cap and 0W20 is full synthetic. No reason to think the factory put any other oil in a new engine if that is what is said it requires.

I can try to find the quote someone but I recall it was stated somewhere a thicker oil is used at the factory.
