Nitto or Toyo AT3…. 285/55r22

Just got done new tires and went 285/55r22. Was initially looking for Toyo AT3 due to concerns about Nitto Ridge grapplers but test fit a pair of Nitto. Anyone running the same size of either band and have pics..thoughts?

Just put on 285/45r22 AT3s on. Compared to your pics, it looks similar but a little less aggressive on the sidewall tread (with aggressive side facing out), but still noticeably aggressive, as far as general looks. They are definitely more quiet than Grapplers though... no question.

2021 Laramie, crew cab, sport, no lift.

That looks amazing! I'm going to need new tires soon and was also debating between the Toyo AT3 and Nitto RG, I think you've sold me on the RG. That aggressive sidewall really sets them off.

I think there are several of us in the same boat. Nothing better than a forum like this to over analyze things - Ha Ha.

I am adding the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT to the mix........

Couldn't agree more. Ironically, a buddy of mine (fellow Mopar guy) recommended I check out the Mickey Thompsons but they're just not...aggressive looking enough for me. The ATZ model look great but don't come in my preferred size, unfortunately.

The MT Baja Boss tires that I am talking about have a VERY aggressive look. They have only been out for a short period of time. You must be looking at something else.

I think the only size they have for a 22 inch wheel that will fit is the 33x12.5x22. Is that the problem??

They are also much heavier than the Toyo AT3s. I am factoring that into my "over analysis".

No, I'm running aftermarket 20x9 -12mm and my current tires are 295/60r20 which if memory serves they do offer. Hmm, sounds like I need to look again. I agree with the overanalyzing part though - "well this one weights xx lbs more, but this one is 3PMSF rated, but this one is cheaper" etc etc etc to the point where my tires are so bald I just need to make a decision already :ROFLMAO:

So after some additional research and due diligence, I have to walk back my initial thoughts on the MT Baja Boss - these could very well be my next set of tires. To your point, very aggressive looking (those sidebiters are off the charts) available in my current 295/60r20 size, 50k treadwear warranty (none for Nitto) and icing on the cake is they are 3PMSF certified. Top notch reviews from many outlets and they're cheaper than the major competitors (KO2, Ridge Grappler, Open Country AT3) to boot. They are heavier than the others, though.

Do you haven any rubbing issues? Or did you have to trim anything in the front?

having owned all three, the falkens are the best bang for your buck.
^that. I wish they had a 285/50 or 285/55/22 though. 😥

Where did you buy these tires. im looking all over and cant find the size
 
285/55/r22 are all going to be E-rated right? Can anyone comment on what the ride is like vs the stock 285/45's? Maybe the extra sidewall kind of cancels out the higher ply and it feels about the same (when aired down)?

They are. The closest I found this morning is a Michelin Defender 275/50/22. The weight savings for these (38lbs)over my 285/50/22 toyo at3 (56lbs) is crazy.

Speaking about ride comfort: if you air the e-rated down to 50lbs, they feel just like P-rated tires.

What exactly does the weight difference mean, like in practical/real-world/what does it actually affect terms?

And that's good news about them riding nice when aired down but...there's still the issue of all these larger tires being A/T's, and not H/T's. I just put on Falken Wildpeak H/T02's (285/45r22) and they seem like a perfect balance to me. Most aggressive-looking H/T tire I've ever seen. Excellent wet traction, solid on snow so far (even doing pretty well on ice). And they ride nicer than my stock Pirelli's did. I feel like E-rated A/T tires, aired-down or not, just wouldn't ride as comfortable.

This makes me lean towards (eventually) swapping my 22's out for 20's and going with 275/60's. Much broader selection and they're half the price of the 285/55r22's (which basically pays for the wheels).

Yeah, got to pay to play and all that. I was just looking at 35 inch tires for 24 inch wheels, and they’re $800 a piece. My 22 inch Toyo AT3’s were $500 a piece.
