I left them unpainted, but regarding your other question, they don't use any sticky tape at the top. There's a rubber seal that you put on the edge (and that actually has double sided tape on it, but only to hold it to the flare itself, not to the truck body). The flares are "springy" and shaped to make a good bit of tension that pushes the top edge tightly to the fender. That creates a nice clean looking seal between the flare and the fender. I took one off recently and there were no signs of water / salt / dirt underneath the flare, after the Midwest winter. Very happy with them.
