I just purchased a new 25’ Ram limited, after 1000 miles on the truck I started to get wastegate rattle on the turbos.

The dealership tech looked at it and recommended the wastegates be replaced. The dealership service manager then decided to open up a star case to see if this was normal operation, and stellantis engineers came back and said wastegate rattle is normal.

I have a really hard time believing this is true and feel they are trying to get out of repairing the issue. I’ve been running the truck it’s got just over 2,000 miles on it and the issue still persists. Aside from the rattle being somewhat annoying, I’m concerned it will cause long term damage to the trucks engine.

Anyone else dealing with any similar issues on the Hurricane HO engines?

I am not an expert, have been casually following Hurricane growing pains with an eye to future purchase. Key question for you is when the rattle happens. Cold start only or part throttle when warmed up?

If the rattle is only on cold startup, it seems to be the nature of the beast. It may even be generally normal for electronically controlled waste gates on cold starts. I'm not fully convinced but this is what others say. Stellantis says the same thing as regards cold starts.

If the rattle is at part throttle on a warmed engine, I would not call it normal. It could be defective waste gates. Also manifold leaks can cause waste gate rattle. This is often accompanied by a whistling noise. And finally a failing turbo may cause waste gate rattle. And there are supposedly a few other things which can sound like waste gate rattle.

On a cold start the engine sounds great, no notable issues. The waste gate rattle happens specifically at 1600-2000 rpm on acceleration or time to time cruising in a high gear at low rpm’s.

I can’t see this as normal operating, their solution at the dealership right now includes, test driving other similar model trucks with the HO’s to see if the same thing is happening, and that will be the deciding factor for whether or not they cover this under warranty. Sounds ridiculous….does not seem they know what to do.

I was wondering if with the electronic waste gates, it’s a programming issue and they can be tuned?

This could be similar to the stutter on light acceleration in the same rpm range on the SO that others and myself have reported. I’m leaning more towards a programming issue, but it definitely could be mechanical too.
