After weeks of trying, all I had was a bad ground cable so I thought I would share all the steps necessary for an easy mod to most 5th gen trucks without factory remote start.
DISCLAIMER *** By doing this, the truck could remote start with the hood open and therefore be a hazard for someone working on the truck. If this is a concern for you, DO NOT do this mod. If you are responsible with your key fob placement and do not mind the risk, feel free to continue this mod***
HOW TO ADD REMOTE START IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE HOOD SWITCH AT THE HOOD LATCH:
All you need is the following:
Jscan or alpha obd (Jscan was easier for me but either works)
Key fob programmed with remote start (you can get a fob for about $30 and program yourself using jscan or alpha. Just search it in the forums or send me a message)
T-tap (1)
14-16ga wire (2ft)
Terminal end for wire (1) also not a must but makes it easier
Connector end for wire to plug into T-tap (1)
HOW TO:
1. First off, check the bcm under the steering column, and in the left connector harness, see if you have the purple wire with blue tracer in PIN 11. If not, you will need to add a wire in PIN 11 for this to work.
2. Add a T-tap onto that wire
3. Connect a ground wire to the T-tap. If you follow the plastic from near the bcm to the door panel, behind it right near the opening of the door you can pull back and there will be two ground wires already bolted into the side of the truck
4. Unscrew the 10mm nut and add your ground wire with the terminal end onto that bolt and screw the nut back on
5. Now clean everything up and go into Jscan or alpha obd
6. Set the hood adjar reading to 500/500 ohm
7. Set hood adjar to present
8. Set remote start to present
That's it!
If it works, remote start will be enabled and you will not have a message on the dash saying your hood is adjar

I also got the fob with the tailgate release as an added bonus and there are more forums here to detail how to get that working as well. Just don't forget to add a dampener.
I will add if for some reason this still does not work for you. I actually cut the tracer wire and T-tapped the wire going to the BCM to the ground. I don't think that was necessary but I had already done it and did not feel like reconnecting it back to the other half of the wire that goes towards the PCM
