Fumes in cab while towing

This past week was my first trip with my new ram standard output, hurricane engine. After an hour into the trip, we’ve noticed fumes entering the cab while the air conditioning was on recirculation. We do have a few oil fields here in Michigan, so we just assumed it was the burning of those fields because that was a similar smell. Upon further towing to and from our destination, we’ve noticed that there was a correlation with working the engine harder, pushing it to near 3000 RPM while towing up hills and then letting up the gas, the cab would then fill with this fume smell that was very nauseating.
Not 100% positive that it is in relation to the air conditioner or not because we did smell it coming from the vents when it was not on. Just wondering if there’s anybody who experienced similar events while towing heavy loads.
I’ve looked under the truck periodically afterwards, and there is no leaks on the floor of my garage.
