Coming up on my first oil change. I generally like to do them myself to make sure it’s done correctly. 2023 Ram 1500 bighorn 3.6L V6.

Looking for your thoughts on OEM filter and oil or other brands? I usually use OEM parts for previous cars but wanted everyone’s thoughts on the Mopar filter and oil the dealer uses.

Thanks everyone.

I'd use OEM for the filter and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or any MS-6395 certified oil during the warranty period, or after for that matter. Also keep good records just in case there is a warranty claim. The 3.6 is a breeze to change with the cartridge filter on top of the engine

It seems like it should be easy.

6 quarts correct? I don’t have the manual in front of me but I believe that is what I read somewhere here online.

Not sure on the volume, I'm familiar with the 3.6 in the Town and Country/Pacifica

I always went to dealership while under warranty, that way there was no excuses. If you look online, can usually find a oil change package for dealerships 3 to be used over 2 years.
Last time I looked it was $170 for the HEMI. Otherwise check for coupons as well.

$170 for what exactly?
My Hemi gets an oil change for $50

Can use aftermarket if you want. I think the oem filter is cheap enough especially on a v6. For oil I have always used full Synthetic Mobile 1 as it's very cheap and never had a problem with it.

Always check your diostick after changing the oil after letting the engine run for a few moments to ensure you have the right amount. Don just go by the book but as a guide. Ie if it says 6qt add 5.5 and then turn the engine on for around 30 seconds and off and check dipstick. The hash marks represent 1 qt, so if you are half way on the marks add .5 quarts.

I've had several pentastars and always do OEM filter and any full synthetic withbthe mopar certification. Important on that filter to mark the position on filter and housing to assist with how tight to re-thread and also make sure to replace the O-rings that cone with the new filter.

Don't overthink it. The recommended oil for your engine is 0w-20 semi-synthetic. Any of the common brands of oil and filters will be more than adequate if following the service schedule for miles/time. Today, full synthetic is much easier to find than semi-synthetic, especially in 0w-20 weight and should be even better. Even with full synthetic, it's shouldn't cost you more than $50 to change it yourself.

Full Synthetic from dealership? I've not seen any oil change from dealership that low in years. SO if that's the case, obviously the prepaid plan wouldn't work in your benefit.
I change my own oil. For $170 I can do at least 3 oil changes.
It's a 20 minute job, even at dealerships I don't see $170 for an oil change. I just checked a few local dealers and they are at $90 for a full syn oil change which imo is still overpriced.

If you are paying $170 for an oil change you are getting shafted.

It's THREE oil changes for $170 to be used over 2 years, guess you MISSED that ;):ROFLMAO:

Not everyone wants to do their own oil changes or can, but it's cool you do and can.

Do you guys use a ramp or can a medium sized guy fit under without jacking up the truck? That will change if I do it myself or not.

It depends if your truck is lifted or lowered and how much of that medium-sized guy is around you waist.
My truck is leveled up 3" with 34" tires. I can slide under it with plenty of room to spare. My weight is evenly distributed.

I installed Mobil1 M1-113A oil filter for my 5.7L HEMI back in June (1st oil change). Added the self-service on the My Mopar portal for record keeping, and kept the oil/filter receipt for good measure.

Years ago I invested in a floor jack, jack stands and some tools and taught myself to maintain all my three vehicles; engine/transmission oil changes, battery replacements, brake jobs, spark plugs, V-belts, and the occasional oddity; hitch install, wheel hub assembly replacement, ...etc. Learned a lot, saved a lot and extended the know-how to the kids who enjoyed getting their hands greasy alongside their old man.

No belly weight. Factory truck.

As far as doing stuff myself I do for most everything I can. But sometimes it’s cheaper for me to have it done by someone and work to make much much more $ than the hour it takes for the oil change.

It is 3 oil changes, the Chrysler service contracts are usually a really good deal Most include tire rotations too.

Yeah I didn't realize was 3. that is a good deal assuming it's done right.
I couldn't even get my oil changed on my Silverado at 500 miles, they put in 5w30 instead of the 0w20 is actually takes.

I have air suspension and retractable steps. I just roll under.
IMO ramps take longer to use then a jack, hard to get just right unless you have a spot you can mark once you "get it right"

Dealer has the following deal. $155 for 2 oil changes and two tire rotations. Must be used in 12 months.

Could I do it for half? Yes. Is it worth doing it myself between the time, cleanup? No. Also goes in the official books so I wouldn’t have to show any proof of oil changes and service if any warranty issues came up.
