So I am sitting here thinking about benefits of etorque. I am well aware that it doesn’t add torque at RPM above 1000RPM. But the lingering question is

“Why does etorque V8 get 22 MPG on highway and standard gets 21MPG?” I realize these are EPA estimates.

One of the modes of eTorque operation is to assist the engine when it is running on four cylinders (in ECO). I certainly can’t provide evidence to support this, but I believe it does help keep in the engine in ECO mode. No way to verify it, but even up slight grades at reasonable freeway speeds, my truck hangs in ECO, and it indicates 30-60 mpg while doing that. I’m thinking that’s where the improvement comes from.

A very interesting question. The above is probably accurate, although I have no data either to help prove it.

The highway test circuit has some slower/faster bits, according to the EPA, but no stops. As I understand the eTorque modes, one of the modes is rev matching the engine for up-shifts and downshifts using the motor/generator rather than by using fuel. That's what one of the recent explanatory videos said anyway. I have a hard time thinking this would amount to 1 MPG, but maybe it contributes. Only a guess.

eTorque seems really slick in operation and I like it, that is as long as I never have to pay out-of-pocket for a new 48v pack or a motor/generator :). Don't want to know how much those cost.
