EPA eliminates start/stop credits

I’m no fan of auto start/stop. I disable it on any vehicle I’ve owned that has it. But I don’t see this changing anything unless it’s somehow codified into law. There’s nothing stopping the next administration from reimplementing the policies again. Car makers can’t afford to change how they make cars every time a new administration comes into power. Auto start/stop has become too ingrained at this point. As much as I’d love to see it go away I’m not holding my breath.

Never forget that Gov't regulations are written by the industry that is supposedly being regulated. Auto/Stop is probably cheap to implement and it results in EPA credits for the manufacturer. It's like printing money. If the credits go away, the feature will go away.
 
My house mate's Ford Ranger has a horrible start-stop feature, it is too slow to start the vehicle again when ready to jump out into traffic, have to remember to disable it when expecting to go for a hole in traffic. She should disable it with a bypass harness.

My Ram is a slightly different result. I do not like the reliability risk and complexity of the eTorque system but the start-stop is seamless. Even when pushing to go for a traffic hole, the engine is running by the time I get to the gas pedal. It is worth some economy improvement in stop-and-go city traffic.

If I did dislike it, I would buy the small harness to disable it. I did get a skip-shift eliminator for my M6 Challenger ScatPack, I did not buy it for fuel economy and I consider that "feature" to be a designed-in safety defect.

Actually, they could simply modify software to disable it permanently, then not supply an additional battery but change nothing in their current architecture. No different than the 'button' pushed to disable it.

They could also just produce the same non-etorque Hemi that was offered or the 2019 thru 2024 models years. Different manufacturers use various means to achieve start/stop. I suspect that Ram’s solution of going with the etorque for the v6 and Hemi engines are on the more expensive side, considering the software and the extra equipment involved (MGU and 48v battery module). I don’t know the actual cost but Eliminating etorque would allow them to offer Hemi equipped 1500’s at a lower cost to buyers, although I’m not sure they would. But it’s never that simple to change something in the design of a finished product.
