I am a new truck guy, my background and experience comes from higher performance sports cars/sedans (forced induction V8’s). I thought it was interesting that our exhaust is what looks like a 2.5” into a 3” mid pipe, back to 2.5” dual after the muffler.

From my experience this would be a huge bottleneck restriction in the exhaust. Any reason that I am overlooking that aftermarket companies don’t offer a dual 2.5” with an x-pipe in the middle besides cost? Is there truly no performance to be gained with that setup?

If a charger/challenger with the 5.7 benefits from the more free flowing pipes, why wouldn’t we have the same power increase. Even two aftermarket mufflers would not be much heavier than the factory can, and there seems to be plenty of room underneath for the dual pipe setup. Maybe someone here can help me see what I’m overlooking. Thanks!

I come from the same background and one is easy install for the consumer. You would also have to cut and modify factory catted ypipe. No company will want to do that.
Also a 3in pipe supports alot more power than you think. 82-02 camaro and firebird were ypiped and can be made to make ALOT if power. I had a 2000 that put 550hp to the wheels 1-7/8 long tube headers into 3in ypipe and mid pipe then cutout for track and 3in in dual 2.5in out muffler for street. We made some with forced induction well over 800hp too. Even with some customers cars open headers or true dual xpipe to turn downs very minimal difference.

Awesome, thanks for the reply and sharing your experience. I try to find the proof in the pudding where possible, if the single 3” isn’t as much of a restriction as I believed, then there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel.
