I have a 2020 RAM 1500 Laramie with 72,000 miles. Recently it started having incorrect DTE and fuel gauge readings.
I believe it is the fuel level sensor, but would like to confirm before dropping the tank to replace.

What I'm seeing is inconsistent DTE and fuel level readings when I fill up and as it consumes fuel. Sometimes I'll fill up and it's fine. The next time it may show only 3/4 full and DTE matches that reading.
When it does that I can drive for a while and it might go up but not always.

If it's not the fuel level sensor I was thinking it would be the gauge cluster. I'm assuming the DTE gets the fuel level from the fuel level sensor and not from the fuel gauge, but I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Intermittent inaccuracies, I would think bad connection somewhere. If it was a bad part, it will normally be wrong all the time. Ram gauges, read full when grounded, or completed circuit as opposed to GM which reads empty upon ground. Which means if the circuit is reading low, it doesn't have connection. If it read high, it would be a short. You may have a loose or dirty ground, or other connector. One other possibility, with these trucks, battery on it's way out, if it's original.

With the tank in place, you reach up and on top of it and re-connect the electrical connector to the fuel pump assembly. Maybe the contacts are oxidized and not making a good connection. Read up in the thread below and study the pictures. You'll be working blindly, but it's not difficult.

If that doesn't help, you'll probably have to drop the tank and pull the assembly for further inspection/repair.
