Do I have to carry the key everywhere?

I recently switched to a 2019 longhorn from my Ford F-150.
One feature that I loved on the F-150 is the keypad on the exterior of the door. It allowed me to keep the key inside the car at all times and unlock and lock the doors from the keypad. I do lots of hiking and kayaking in remote areas and it is nice to not have to worry about carrying a car key with me.

I do not see a keypad on my Dodge. Am I required to bring the key everywhere I go? Or can I keep the key inside and lock and unlock the doors without having my key on me?

U have to keep the key fob on u. That's the 1 thing I like about Fords. I bet they got a patent on it because I don't know any other car company that does that.

Could keep fob in truck and just take small physical key into door

Unfortunately no keypad so you need to bring the key fob with you. If you have Sirius Guardian then you can use the Uconnect app and lock/unlock from your phone that way you could leave the key fob in the truck.

Try fob in a faraday bag and then unlock with Uconnect. You are screwed though if you run out of phone battery or cell signal.

I am getting a Cap on the bed so I can sleep there when I travel. I have
to put the Fob in a RF Blocker bag or someone could just open
the Cab and steal stuff or hit the start button and drive off with me in
the back. I also have to have one in the house for the spare fob too
as it would be close enough for the passive entry to work.

This is the one I am looking at:

My son got this version for his Charger. It's a 2 pack and they work great- https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07MDF5TX9?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

You can lock the fob inside the truck with Sirius/Uconnect Guardian, no faraday bag required. Truck can tell if the fob is inside or outside the cab, so people can't just walk up and unlock the truck by touching the handle. But, that's not secure (equipped thieves can just clone the fob signal), and if the truck loses connection, you won't be able to unlock it with Guardian... ask me how I know, lol.

This is what I am planning in doing. I can keep it in the center console and lock it with Uconnect, and I can’t unlock it by the door. How did you truck lose connection? How often do you end up getting locked out. Do you take any other precautions to avoid that happening?
I also want to say this is a great community. I never thought I would get so many great replies. Thanks everyone.

If you take the metal key with you. Can keep fob in truck. Lock doors 3times truck will lock itself and ignore the fob till you put the metal key in door and unlock it. Might be a pita to do. Just a throwing it out there

Ooo that's a good point...now that you mention it I can't think of any other Manufacturer or brand that has keypads. Of course...I'm sure some luxury brand snobs would say it's tacky looking but on the 2020's they're very sleek looking..

Lincoln does a good job with their keypads, it's hidden in a piano black exterior trim on the door sill, you can't see it until you touch it, then it lights up, haptic feedback with no physical buttons.

The keypad was one of the major things I missed from my F150, super convenient to always have access for whatever reason and no fear of ever being locked out.

Yes but Lincoln is owned by Ford lol.
There was talk about GM adding some sort of keypad to their lineup soon but it might just be rumor. The New Ford's have that haptic feedback keypad now too.

Absolutely, I was just noting it can be done tastefully should a premium brand want to do it instead of the more basic old school design of the current keypads on Fords.

However, I did find it as an option when speccing a ZR2 on Chevy's site. I'm thinking about buying a smaller truck for the tighter trails in my area (not getting rid of the RAM). They do have a keypad option for that truck on Chevy's build site. It's like a $200 option, not sure if it's on other GM products.

I could see it being worth $200. The ZR2 seems to be a very capable little truck for off roading...I can't knock it lol.

I was impressed with it, can do everything from rock climbing to baja style off-roading as well. I like it has front & rear lockers, with the rear locker being able to stay locked at speed for drifting in 2WD in the open desert.

I mind says Tacoma though, rock solid reliability and crazy good residuals, but my heart says ZR2.

Tough call. Personally I can't stand how uncomfortable the Tacomas are. If it's one of those things where you need a little extra space I'd go with the Tacoma but if not... definitely the ZR2.

Yeah, the Tacoma also feels ancient, like a 10 year old truck, the rear view camera resolution is like a old cell phone, it is build really well though. I think I'm going to the direction of a ZR2.
