Tow/Haul mode simply raises the shift points to a higher RPM, and doesn't "lock out" gears. ERS, as I understand it, allows the driver to select the max gear the tranny can shift to.
Tow/Haul adjusts shift points for power not economy. It also eliminates multiple displacement (cylinder deactivation) It also does some neat stuff when you're compression braking down hills, holding the gear so long as your foot is off the gas and actually downshifting for you if you're braking. But once you start accelerating again, it will run up through all the gears.
So, it sounds like ERS could be used as a shifter and would be particularly helpful in significant mountains. Whereas, tow/haul would be good for general towing most everywhere?
