Have my first Diesel engine going into the NE winter… what are the best practices for plugging in the engine block heater and using the cold weather intake cover? Thanks!

Use both. The cover will help the engine warm up faster (diesels love being warm). As for the block heater, get a timer and set it so it comes on a couple of hours before you need to drive it. You can save money on electricity by doing this.
