About two weekends ago I was playing the radio while cleaning out my garage. I inadvertently ran the battery dead. I charged it up and it started fine and started all week as normal. Last weekend it sat all weekend and when I went to start it Sunday evening it kind of drug when starting like the battery was low and then started. The stop/start warning light came on in the dash. I was only going for a 15 minute drive. It ran fine. I cut it off and then restarted it. The warning light off and ran normal. I drove it this past week all was well until Friday. I drove for about an hour and got out of it for about an hour. Started fine but the gps has my truck about 20 miles from where I was. The satellite radio would not work either. I drove it home and cut it off. Saturday morning started it up and it took the gps a little longer than normal to find truck but everything worked and was back to normal. It sat all day Saturday to about 2 PM today. Battery didn't have enough juice to start it. I jumped it and took it to the local auto parts store to get a battery. The check engine light was now on. It is about a 15 minute drive. They tested battery and said it was charged about 80 percent and alternator is working correctly. Their computer said to "charge battery and check again". I left the parts store with no new battery. When I got home the check engine light cut off and battery charged back up to 97 percent. Would a weak battery cause all of this? None of this happend util I ran the battery down.

Your battery is trashed.

The parts store thinks they did you a favor, but they didn't. Well, maybe they did.... it gives you time to read up here about better, larger batteries that will fit in place of the original. Like an H8.

How did the auto parts store come up with that 80% figure? Did they run a conditioning cycle in the 2 minutes they spent checking it? I think not. Check specific gravity of the cells? Nah. Probably just measured voltage. So your battery is like 5 years old anyway, and now you did something bad to it. Would it kill you to replace it?

I went there to replace it. They said it wasn't bad. I am just going to replace it tomorrow. Kid probably just didn't want to have to change it.

If you drain a regular acid battery dead, there’s a good chance it won’t recover fully. Not made for that like a deep cycle battery.

i thought are truck had a battery safety that automaticly turn off everything when the battery is getting to low and engine off? like for say, you forgot your cab lights on , or anything else when the engine is off

This same sort of thing happened to me. I recommend replacing with an Interstate AGM battery. That was recommended to me by my brother-in-laws auto shop. So I went to an Interstate warehouse and bought it and replaced myself. That was 1.5 years ago and it has been starting strong ever since. They have a 3-yr replacement warranty, then no warranty.
