I'm sure y'all have noticed the lack of light at night with the factory LED taillights. Well, in my last truck I had some slim cubes installed by the hitch and decided to try it again. I know I ain't the first to do this kind of lighting, but maybe this thread with inspire others.
Lights are Sylvania flush mount pods (900 raw lumens, lifetime warranty, IP-67 Waterproof.)
1. Built some custom brackets out of 1.5 inch aluminum strip from Lowe's. Measured and bent with a bench vise.
2. Painted, then drilled some mounting holes.
3. Drilled one hole in each side of trailer chain mounts.
4. Made wiring harness using 2 pin trailer connectors from AutoZone cut in half.
5. Assembled using all stainless hardware from Lowe's,including Nylon locking nuts. Added black RTV between my bracket and hitch for added strength.
6. Soldered other end of 2 pin to to center black/reverse wire on 7-pin trailer harness. Wrapped in 3m electrical tape, then Tessa Harness tape.
7. Zip tied everything up and hit the hitch screws with some matte black.
This came out really clean, you almost don't see/notice them and they put out some serious light for the size/price. Overall, I have about 80 bucks on this project. Bottom pic against garage is them lit without factory reverse lights. Activated them alone using alfaobd.
Pics or it didn't happen...
